The reason for this is probably because your cartridge has been exposed to very cold conditions. Put it in the microwave for 30s and it will be fixed.

It's usually just wear and tear.

Try cleaning the contacts on the back/bottom of the cartridge. Use cotton buds/q-tips and isopropyl alcohol (not too much - squeeze the cotton against the inside of the bottle neck to help wring it out, and try to use 99% isopropyl if you can. A local pharmacy will probably sell it to you).

As someone who's system just fucked up out of the blue and had to be sent in for repairs, never buy digital. They basically replaced the bottom half of my system and I was very lucky to be able to get some of my data back. Much as I love digital downloads, it's not worth the risk at this point, not with Nintendo's utterly asinine system-locked account system.
