The Cyndaquil line have been like this in the 3D games (since Stadium 2) and the anime since the beginning.

No. Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur are the original starters, and they have defining features.
Feraligatr and Meganium too. Typhlosion is the only one who just get's bigger.
