NPCs using status conditions is so rare that you'd only need to use those items a few times during the game, most of which are long after you've gotten access to Full Heal. Then you end up with 20 of each status item sitting around in your bag doing nothing.

Most modern RPGs heal your status ailments between battles anyway. It's not that big of a deal.

Just played through Y again last week and it's not rare at all that you get status. Sure they don't use shit like Toxic or Thunder Wave often but shit like Flame Body and Static appear frequently. Bought 5 Burn Heals mid game and used up all of them, had picked up and used a few earlier too.
You pick up like 3-4 of each through each game, having 20 of each only happens if you're hoarding them. It's not like the medicine pocket is crammed either way.But yes, you can buy Full Heals instead usually around late midgame usually.

You know, there are times you have to walk significantly longer than that, and not to mention it being a two-way trip and the healing takes a little time too. It can take significantly longer if you're not using a Repel, and repels costs more than medicine.

Shitmon solo runs and challenges would be easier.
Often the most difficult part of them was to stash enough money for Super Potions at early game before you have access to lemonades.

Healing Weedles at Pokemon Centers was not an option. Struggle is a better move than Poison Sting and, to have access to it, you had to waste 40 turns to spend all your string shot PPs.
