There's also the + shaped medal that Mallow, Kiawe, Lana, and Sophocles all have with the top mark coloured, implying they're all from the same island and the trial captains on other islands have a different side coloured

It's already stated that there's four islands. We know of Melemele and Akala currently and we're still waiting to learn the names of the other two. It's likely that they'll be similar to the Hawaiian words for pink and purple, whatever those are, because Melemele apparently means yellow and Akala means red. Plus, all four islands are associated with a type, colour, Tapu, and Oricorio

I agree with the concern. It seems so far with the combination of skin-tones, speech patterns, and multiple Pacific island cultures (Hau loves malasadas, a Polynesian snack), that Game Freak is really trying to represent an accurate and culturally-aware view of Hawaii and Pacific cultures.

For me, I LOVE the trailers with the little Japanese boy (Shohei?) that moved to Hawaii and made friends with an aboriginal boy (Hoku?). It makes it seem like Game Freak really wants to do justice to the beauty and wonder of the islands and get kids from all over the world to enjoy learning about other cultures.

Question. What announcements has Ohmori tweeted about in the past?

I'd like to know for comparison's sake.

Yeah, I'm loving the trailers, and I trust the developers to have done their research, but again, I'm not Hawaiian and I have limited knowledge of its culture, so I can't judge whether or not they've been respectful and not exploitative.

I'm a minority myself and while it doesn't bother me when people (mostly white girls) engage in 'cultural appropriation' of my culture, I know people really do take offense to it because some things have special significance and it's a bit of a slap in the face to that. People may mean well or just like and appreciate other cultures, but that doesn't mean that they're going to take all of it into account when they pick out aspects that they like for their own personal use.

I'm from NZ and in my class today we watched a documentary about a bunch of instances where companies overseas used Maori culture in a way that undermined the significance of things to Maori without even realising it, even though they recognised that they were taking it from Maori culture. Heck, there was a game (XBox, I think) where they fucked up even though they DID talk to Maori about it.

It's hard to take a step back and REALLY think about whether or not what you're doing could be offensive, and you might make mistakes even if you do try to do what you're doing as sensitively as possible.
