There has always been that one popular pokemon and it changes with each generation. They always phase old things out for the sake of the new. This isn't any different. As much as people say Survival at Iwark Island was a terrible episode that had Iris ruin Hikari's character, I genuinely thought it was a cute and fun episode with nice character interactions and heavy focus on Hikari as part of the BW gang.

Well it's sad to say but Ash at winning at thing, not counting Orange League and the Battle Frontier.

The who point of the anime is to get young people in the game's, if you want to see a more developed anime Pokemon show, Origins is your only other choice, that and Generations now.

If you want to see Ash develop more, I would tell you go read some fanfiction, their's a couple I read that were pretty nice, if a little silly which I think works for Pokemon.

Any alt, is to read Pokemon Adventures since they add new characters to the story all the time.
