I remember I nuzlocked a HGSS randomizer and had a Ratatta with Huge Power. Never evolved it because it would lose its ability.

There are, but in my experience it just throws everything through a hue/saturation filter instead of actually giving themed palettes, and it looked too ugly for me to want to keep at it.

For me it is mostly autism. If I am not playing on an actual copy of the game it feels so much more fake. It makes me confront the fact that these aren't actually my bros, they are just disposable code.
I also don't like that fact that if I get a bro I can't transfer it forward through the games like I can with real versions. I think there are ways to but I am not a l337 c0re hacker like you so I don't know shit about that.

Is it just the upper display or the whole thing?
Sometimes I'll run into a bug where the sprites totally get fucked up as if something has somehow "shifted" the data in memory, then the upper screen blacks out if you access a menu or another cell.

All you have to do is just save and reset though, nothing permanent.

Only suggestion I can think of at this point is trying it out on a system running 7 or 10 and see if it fixes anything.

You could also try getting another ROM from a different site, or try SS and see if it works.

Japanese Pokémon Red, v1.0 with as it appears on the Super Game Boy.

Chose Bulbasaur > Ivysaur > Venusaur, Shell Fossil for Kabuto > Kabutops, Hitmonlee, and Jolteon
I don't evolve any stone Pokémon until they reach their last learned move (ie. Pikachu's last move is Thunder at level 43)
By the final Gym battle (level 50), the only Pokémon I'll have that haven't evolved will be Gloom (learns Solar Beam at level 52) and Dragonair (evolves at level 55). I might grind everything up to level 65 for the league after that. My Pokédex will be at 123/151 caught by the time I challenge the league, and Mewtwo will be 124.

The only Pokémon I won't be able to see without trading will be Magmar, Pinsir, Omastar, and Mew, for a grand total of 147/151 seen. I'm using VBA-M, and I don't seem to be able to trade though.
