I never liked the fact that he uses reserves in Pokemon Leagues, aside from say Johto.

Each new region is supposed to have his Pokemon test out their strength in the league.

It'd be kind of pointless to not even use the new Pokemon he caught. Not to mention the show quality would kind of suffer because old and new Pokemon would be fighting for screentime, like how it was in early Johto

Face it, Yokai Watch's popularity has affected the games and anime (the latter far more than the former due to Yokai watch's popularity with even younger viewers). TPCi is aiming at even younger audiences now as younger audiences are also the ones who buy more toys (via parents), and the anime is a big toy commercial.

Most people think the exact opposite of that. The leagues that Ash uses reserves are usually regarded as the best ones i.e. Johto and DP.

Ash using region specific mons in Leagues means he's stuck with the same pokemon throughout all of the matches and that usually gets pretty boring. DP literally had the best setup of both worlds. He uses reserves in his other matches. But for the most important match(Ash vs Paul), Ash used only his Sinnoh pokemon.

I think the Kalos League was also fine, aside from the finale of course. But it was probably a last second switch to have him lose.

His battle vs Shota was what really made me appreciate how he stuck it out with his Kalosmons.

Sun and Moon and Yokai Watch's art styles are nothing the fuck alike. Yokai Watch's human characters have a more homogenized face shape, larger eyes that take up more space on the face, and the character motions are less fluid.

Yokai Watch actually resembles Best Wishes and XY than it does Sun & Moon, given both shows use larger eyes that take up large portions of the face and smaller mouths, and face shapes that are mostly the same across multiple characters.

From the Sun and Moon art we've seen, we've seen a larger variety of face shapes, with Ash's emphasizing his lower jaw and giving him a larger mouth and cheeks to emphasize the expressions of his mouth and to make the "z-shapes" under his eyes more prominent. The show is also more noodly and looser than Yokai is generally, and it gets almost abstract with its in betweens or expressions like Litten running past.

We can also see from the clips that the over all animation is also more fluid, with the simpler lines allowing motion to be better portrayed. Characters don't simply snap from one expression to another. When Ash is walking into the classroom, he actually turns and we see his whole body moving at once, as well, which is something the anime previously didn't tend to do very often outside of more extreme and "important" shots.

The coloring, shading, and backgrounds are also highly different from Yokai Watch and the anime prior, using more washed out colors in general rather than the stark, defined bold ones of the previous series. It has a somewhat "watercolor" feel without actually being watercolor, resembling some Ghibli films or some of the earlier Digimon movies far, far more than anything on Yokai Watch.

The only thing that I think anyone can reasonably say is similar at all to YW is the Rotomdex. Not even the school setting is expressly unique, as Yokai Watch treats said setting as largely incidental.

There's also no overall similarity between monster design, and the in betweens everyone keeps sharing to show Sun and Moon's "poor" animation show that Pikachu is just as expressive as his anime counterpart, while YW treats its titular monsters as toys, with only characters like Whisper or Manjimutt typically showing much expression. This can often be seen in the wide-eyed, toy-like stares of Jibanyan and Komasan.

The two series don't show much similarity in effects, either. This can be seen in the shots of Ash summoning his Z-move; for the flashier moments in Yokai Watch, they tend to utilize stock footage, but this scene is set in location with the background going grayscale to reflect the impact of the moment. The energy coming off of Ash and Pikachu is almost crackling, with faint yellow particles being seen that slightly resemble "kirby dots" from western comics. Whereas Yokai Watch's flashier effects are standard, CGI beams and fireworks whose closest analogues in Pokemon are the colorful explosions you tend to see in Kalos's Pokemon Performances.

In short, the show has not been made to more effectively resemble Yokai artistically, they've made it look LESS like said show.

The reason why the BW series was such a black sheep at first was because the games were doing a soft-reboot sort of thing and the anime followed suit.
However along the way they realized they could just cash in on the old shit so they had a bunch of stuff from the previous series.

For me personally
Kanto-OI-Johto feels like the first segment, and the most strongly connected.
Advanced Generation-DP feels like the second segment. The beginning of BW is just completely different from the rest though so I can't really compare it. But after a while it strongly feels like BW is a continuation of the overall story.

I would argue XY feels the least connected since we never saw any notable callbacks and Ash lost. It's funny because the XY games feel so ingrained with the all of the past games.

Sun and Moon seems like it's going to be quite standalone though I expect at least some callbacks since the games are cashing in on Gen 1 harder than any of the previous gens.
