I feel like I'm reading Flowers for Algernon. Ash somehow became incredibly competent and almost won a league, has a magic badass unique Pokemon, has Serena, and now...we're going to slowly watch him slowly decay towards being a retard again. He's going to go from a solid protagonist to coloring with crayons and drooling (and getting his ass kicked by a level 5 Litten in the first episode). He's going to have his dignity totally and slowly stripped from him...lost the league, lost Serena, lost Ash-Greninja. Finally he'll lose his mind.

The other night I realized that Ash has only been a Pokemon trainer for a month and a half.

The creators confirmed Ash was 10 years, 10 months, and 10 days old at the start of the series.

He is referred to as being 10 in BW001 (despite it being mentioned that he first left Pallet Town three years ago in AG192, implying he spends one year in each region) so he has only been on his journey for less than two months.

It takes him a week to go through each region. That's pretty impressive. It also makes Serena's love for him kind of seem like puppy love more than anything. Nothing serious. Goodbye Puppy Love girl.

When it comes to her departure, it would have made no difference whether or not she had her crush. If she didn't have that crush and all the spilled spaghetti, blushes, promotions or whatever, then nobody would mind that she was leaving.

But because there's a shipping tease angle to her character, it makes her departure from Ash seem a lot worse. She could have easily gone through her character arcs if she didn't have her crush on Ash. Ash wasn't the only person who influenced her but her rivals, Aria, Clemont, or whomever she happened to meet and encounter with.
