Not enough content, they went too far in casualizing the games, too much genwun/Lucario pandering, and the rivals were the worst in the franchise. If we had a Z it would have been tolerable, but we never got one so there's no way for it to ever have its flaws fixed (outside ROMhacking for the difficulty thing).

What kills XY for me isn't the battle mechanics (which are the best they've ever been), but the dialogue. Talk to any random NCP, and they'll either say something moronic and obvious, insipid, or patronizingly hand-holdly.

The exception is everything directly related to Team Flare 's genocidal plans and AZ's backstory, which had a great sense of mood and pathos around them. I don't get why everything else feels like it was written for three-year olds.

Well in that case why would you ever expect anything to go right?

Gamefreak had antiquated game making skills, they had to quickly learn to make a semi modern game and hire new blood.

The transition from Sprites to 3D probably caused a lot of stress for them.
