Anyone got any kind of advice for a M-Gyarados deck? I'm extremely new to this game and I've been reading the newfag guide and I think I'm getting a hold of what I need to do for this, but some direct advice would be appreciated.

Welcome, friend. Thanks for taking the time to read the guide. The deck does need a lot of work, so let's break it down.

>Pokemon
Okay, first, you say it's a "M-Gyarados deck" and yet you run exactly one copy of it? If you want to build a deck around a Pokemon, you'll need 3-4 copies. I would recommend running 4 Gyarados EX and 4 M-Gyarados EX.

The other Gyarados is unnecessary, it provides nothing to the deck. And while the Swampert is nice for its ability, it requires a bit too much set up, so it's also unnecessary.

As for some additions, Manaphy EX is great for giving you free retreat. And Palkia EX is great for accelerating energy early game and being a secondary attacker. I would consider running 2 Manaphy EX and 3 Palkia EX. Then I would run one Hoopa EX to be able to grab everything.

The only way around Shaymin EX is Abyssal Hand Octillery. I would run a 2-2 line-up of him for draw power.

Moving along, you have some pretty good Trainers so far. You have the core Trainers:

4x Ultra Ball
4x VS Seeker

1x Skyla

But I would also consider adding

4x Rough Seas

And then after that, the tech choices you decide to add are up to you.

Honestly, I don't know how I feel about DCE because you want to be able to do as much damage as possible with M-Gyarados so I would test this deck with 4 DCE and 8 Water Energy or with 0 DCE and 12 Water Energy and see which you prefer more.

Overall, I would just do some testing with these changes and see what you like.

As a general tip, figure what your deck's winning strategy is. There's no apparent synergy between the Pokémon you've chosen.

You are playing only Water Pokémon, so use Dive Ball. Octillery is a cheaper alternative to Shaymin that fits especially well in water decks.

Tierno isn't good for any deck. Just drawing three cards from a Supporter is very little.

Don't worry, I am too, but fortunately in your case M Gyarados, Gyarados and Manaphy full arts are all pretty cheap. Palkia doesn't have a full art.

You could test both and see which you prefer, they're both good options, but you might not want to use your supporter on getting energy back if you don't need the energy that badly.

It was pretty low-tier but it was a deck. And the reason why is because LTC was a double-edged sword; while it did bring back all of the Night March Pokemon, everything else came with it. So they could feasibly do it all over again. I know one game at Ohio States last year I was playing Toad/Puff against Night March. I LTC'd him twice, after two consecutive one-term set-ups. There was no third time because I Quaking Punched after the second drop of LTC. But the point is LTC left open the possibility of setting up all over again. Karen does not. It will be a bigger nail in the deck's coffin.

Breakpoint has many useful cards.
Breakthrough has few, but pricy cards.

IMO: SS > BP > BT > FC if you want to collect or just open a box and then sell the cards.

You'd expect that, but my experience has been different. (For that matter, the maths says even if you have only 4 basics in your deck, you still have a 40% chance of not needing a single mulligan, but it can be deceptive because of how high the chance of requiring multiple mulligans is.)

I'm running this deck right now (hi again) and I never really have any issues with my opponent getting too much advantage from the mulligans. The Red Card also really helps, since if I'm the starting player I can usually sift to it or Skyla (and then use the Skyla to search for it) and not only negate the mulligan advantage but often also reduce their hand (often enough even without mulligans they stay at a >4 card hand after setup). In an earlier build I also used N both for this and for its normal purpose, but N being a supporter really limited its usefulness.

(Before you ask, the Birches are an intentional replacement and I *did* have four Sycamores, but I found myself losing too often for emptying out my deck too quickly.)

So what's the "advantage" based on anyway?

Every time I get paired against a M Mewtwo-EX player it gives them the advantage even though Despair Ray Gardevoir shits on them pretty hard.

You need to have at least 1 Escape Rope and 1 Super Rod
Team Flare Grunt, while not totally bad, isnt that useful. You are better off playing other supports for the turn.
Skyla is a must in Mega decks with Garbodor, being able to search for Mega Turbo, Float Stone and Links adds a lot of consistency.

Pokemon Ranger is only useful against Giratina-EX, Regice, Jolteon-EX and Glaceon-EX.

Having Cobalion makes your deck bypass a weakness by having a non-EX attacker and a evolution attacker.

Giratina isnt much of a problem since your deck doesnt rely on Stadiums or Special Energy.

Instad of having 1 Cobalion and 1 Ranger you are better off having 2 Cobalion.


Super Rod is a must.

There will be a lot of times you will have to discard Energies / Garbodor / Mega Scizor when using Sycamore and you need the Super Rod to be able to use them later.

Wow, I misinterpreted what you said initially and was dumb enough to spend time marking all interesting cards as 'for review'. Turns out what you meant is that you can just take off the filter after it's loaded all the trades to just see all the trades. This actually solves the problem. Thanks a lot.

Is there a way to build a deck around any of the Golurks?

Saddens me enough that there is no EX of it, at least being able to build a deck around it would be sweet.

If you stack the deck, sure. Otherwise you will discard resources. I haven't seen a single person playing mega scizor or mewtwo set up 2 Garbodors, even against power heavy decks of mine. I doubt I'll ever see it given the top consistency cards are ultra ball and sycamore.

In the game it's something like 20-40 commons:1 pack, depending on what the commons are/from, you could easily do like 5 or so uncommons for a pack though.

If you mean real life, 1000 commons usually turns into ~60-80 dollars worth of profit, half that for about ~20-35 (generally if people are buying bulk, they'll pay slightly more for a single collection of tons of bulk)

Lads I've started using the online thing after using it for a very short while 4 years ago, all I really have are the BW XY default theme decks and some HGSS yellow theme deck. Also did the FAQ recommended ideas and unlocked something like 6 rallying cry decks and somehow have the red frenzy and mental might deck. Also just noticed I unlocked the BW basic orange deck somehow. Any ideas on where to start? I'm slowly going through the trainer challenge to unlock more cards in the theme decks and the packs. I have 666 coins, is it worth buying another theme deck? They seem to be lacking any XY theme deck so I'm fairly hesitant.

Mega Scizor, Mega Gardevoir Dual Type, Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Rayquaza and that Zoroark Yveltal list are all very common. Volcanion Baby and Volcanion EX combo is also showing a lot of promise.
