I feel like the best way to describe Ash's new look is that it feels like the 'safety scissors' equivalent to character design. All the hard edges/corners and lines of his face and hair have been rounded off, as if someone took sandpaper to them. I'm surprised they didn't do the same for Pikachu's tail.
