The first three were all great rivals, Tyson was maybe a little cringy in places with his special snowflake Meowth but overall bros.

Tobias was extremely dissatisfying (especially with that bullshit about his Darkrai surviving a STAB supereffective FUCKING GUTS Megahorn from Ash's Heracross), but still just about believable because in the anime, legendaries are supposed to be off-the-charts powerful, way more so than the games.

Alain, too, was a competent trainer, and the rest of the fight was mostly very good though the Charizard vs. Greninja matchup will go down in history as one of the most blatantly bullshit results ever conceived.

But Cameron. Fucking CAMERON. Was an incompetent ass who brought five pokemon to a league match, who had a Riolu that was basically performing on the level of your average Lucario and THEN evolved halfway through its match and wiped the floor with the rest of Ash's team for no discernable reason. What makes him the worst is that he didn't deserve any of his wins and he was a thoroughly annoying character besides who used up tons of screen time.

Cameron is the only one that I find worth being angered by. A complete idiot beating a Ash that should know better, but isn't allowed to because it's BW.

Harrison and Tyson have nothing wrong with them, they simply won those fights and it's conceivable that Ash could beat them in a rematch. I know many find Meowth annoying, but considering what Pikachu can do there's no reason to believe another similar Pokemon cannot be to his level.

Tobias comes out of nowhere, and while it's a shame that Ash at his best got beaten by legendaries at least he put on a great showing. It wasn't jobbing by any means.

The problem with Alain has more to do with the fact that it was the PERFECT timing to have Ash win and switch to a new protagonist. Hell, I would have been fine with Alain becoming the new one. But no. It was the final proof that the anime will always stagnate. Even if we get a new protagonist for Gen 8, it will be too late.

EToP's version of Ash vs Ritchie was amazing, and Ash was forced to withdraw or else his Charizard would have killed Ritchie's In the anime, it was the stupid judge who considered sleeping to be KO'd who gets a lot of the blame. Since Ash almost won the Hoenn league without bringing his A-Team, that only proves that the BF is a tougher challenge than the league.

This happens because in order for the battles to have any sense of dramatic tension or variety there need to be peaks and troughs in the protagonist's performance. Ash needs to come back from behind in at least part of the match for his opponent to feel strong and for it to feel like a proper 'final match' where he overcomes incredible odds to pull victory out of the bag.

If we had an entire match consisting of totally even bouts like Swellow vs Unfezant it would be boring as fuck, no matter who eventually won.

Harrison > Tobias > Tyson > Alain > Richie > Cameron

Harrison served as motivation for Ash to go to Hoenn, Tobias was cheap but Ash actually put a decent strategy into battling him, Tyson was a decent battle but Ash using the same team for multiple 6 on 6 battles in a row dragged it down, Alain's only problem was that Ash had already lost to him two times before this, Richie was just a copy of Ash from earlier in the series but the story surrounding that loss was well written.

But Cameron, everything was wrong with not just this battle but the league in general. Ash's final rival battle with Trip is 1 on 1 and against the Pokémon he's been able to beat before, he used his best Pokémon in his battle with Stephan and then instead of having multiple 6 on 6 battles with a different team in each like he was capable of doing with just Pikachu and his Unova Pokémon he has one 6 on 5 battle where he uses his weakest Pokémon. Oh and Ash actually did worse in this league than previous leagues.
