Early Pokemon illustrations were done like those in fantasy tales - which was the trend at the time. There are different trends now. Trends aren't better or worse than each other, you're simply nostalgia for the soulness you grew up with and are so distant from the current spirit of the series that you don't understand anything about it.

The old artwork has more soul because it doesn't feel like they are posing for an artist. Plus that color technique making it feel it's being drawn by some artist in his spare time, with love and care.

Everything has to be perfectly clean and on-model these days, for marketing purposes.

The poses were a lot more dynamic and full of life. I guess the newer ones are to show the design more rather than character. The newer style has more consistent shapes while the older look follows muscle and tone.

I think some of the Gen I sprites are absolutely amazing and I still think Gen II was the high point for in-game sprites. This whole "the original artwork was better" thing is bullshit but I agree that there are some really good things from back then

There's a difference between simple presentation artwork and and illustratory artwork.
The only thing that's changed is that modern illustrations aren't shown as standalone/individual pieces too often. They're usually used in a larger context nowadays such as full scenes and such.

What exactly are you complaining about? That stock images of pokemon aren't action-oriented anymore? Or is it that pokemon in-game aren't constantly in mid-attack? Because A. They were never REALLY like that in-game, save for a few examples and B. it wouldn't make sense for a full-motion model to constantly be mid-attack. Just look up "pokemon X Y anime battles" or something, it's not like new pokemon are simply incapable of looking intimidating. Even so, they're fictional creatures; they never really were truly scary or feral to begin with, despite what nostalgia may tell you.

Artwork back then was a lot better. The art was more dynamica and the pocket monsters looked more like monster to battle with. In the later gens they tried to appeal more to children and fagboys on /vp/ like the cuter, simpler and bland artstyle more.

The illustrations are done differently as time passes because of trends in popular culture.
On the left are illustration commonly found attached to video games in the 90s that have a fantasy/shounen manga influence. Ont the right are universally appealing, hyper-friendly/inoffensive illustrations because Pokemon is a global franchise and they need to play safe because of all of the markets they are in while also carrying all of the aesthetics popular in children's media in Japan - for their main demographic.

It's super simple and really obvious.
