At the very least, they won't get rid of the megas that already exist. There might not be any new ones, though. Maybe they'll introduce an event legendary that mega evolves in lieu of having a form change.

They're not going to get rid of them, that's dumb. At worst we won't get new ones. Ideally, there's at least 20, and they actually kept quiet about them until the last second, to focus on all the other new shit.

What if they're retconned into signature Z-moves?
They undergo the transformation, perform Mega Giga Beam, then revert back after the Z-move is over.

It will, but they're deliberately not revealing them because they want people to get hyped about all the new stuff that SM is adding or changing, rather than a mechanic introduced last gen.

That'd be pretty awful. It would mean a fair number of Pokemon whose megas made them relevant for the first time in ages, or even for the first time ever, would once again be thrown in the trash.
