Tentatively, I'd imagine the problem might actually be worse, sense my admittedly secondhand understanding of Japanese fans is that they tend to take things more personally. A Japanese genwunner wouldn't just just believe the series was going downhill since genwun, but that the series was actively being made worse intentionally to waste the fans time and money.
I base these assumptions entirely off of people off the internet, who totally can't lie about anything they post.

I assume its different just because the way Pokemon spread in the West.

We have genwunners because most of the people who liked pokemon when it exploded during gen 1 stopped liking pokemon or actually didn't like it enough to care about the games. Just liked it because it was a popular thing as a kid.

Pokemon stopped being mainstream for a very long time with the generation that grew up with gen1 explosion in the West and in fact it became a joke to still like pokemon by the time gen 4 started. (at least by my experience)

I don't know if this is the same in Japan but I seriously doubt their culture took to the series in the exact same way.

I have no problem with people having a dislike towards the newer designs. It's the people that insist on championing the first generation as the pinnacle of Pokémon and saying everything else is shit just because it's not from the original 151. The worst part is that Pokémon Go has caused a lot of them to come back into Pokémon. I literally once saw someone say "Why can't they just make more gen 1 Pokémon and add them into the game?" I hope Niantic adds gen 7 Pokémon into Go when Sun & Moon come out (to promote the 20th anniversary games) so the genwunners can fuck off.

Japan mainly has eeveelutionfags and competitivefags, genwunnerism doesn't really affect Japan that much since they're the first to see everything new.

Genwunners are more of a western thing because Pokemon was everywhere in the 90's but then slinked away in the west around Gen 3. Pokemon in Japan was pretty undefeated until Youkai Watch came around.

I'm not too familiar, but a quick a look through results from googling ポケモン 懐古厨 seems to suggest that Genwunnerism isn't much of a thing. Instead it's Johtofags 金銀厨 who are considered the most annoying, and who are always going on about how everything after Gen II is shit.

And it looks like them and Japanese Hoennbabies get into Johto vs Hoenn gen wars a lot.

In Japan, YW3 first week sold around 600K, and while that isn't the gargantuan numbers the previous games sold, it still has been selling consistenly (near 30-20K per week I believe). Level-5 also has claimed to have no plans for YW next year (other than the mobile port of the 1st game), which implies they're trying to avoid shooting themselves in the foot due to oversaturation.

Everywhere else it seems to be a cult classic of sorts, being Europe the place where it has actually been 1° on the "n° of games sold chart" thing (though considering how low the games sales tend to be there that wouldn't be saying much).
