It's all about the journey and shenanigans, as well as seeing the Pokemon themselves in the anime

>Lance fighting Blue for the Champion's spot between RBY and GSC
For all we know, since Red is encountering Zygarde, it could mean something for SM. I don't know whatever this "h-he's replacing ALL the protags!" meme came from.
