It was Gen 1, except:
- everything held Leftovers for 1/16 HP regeneration per turn
- Sleep Talk was introduced, making Rest viable
- Steel type in its absurdly broken gen 2-5 incarnation was introduced
- Hyper Beam was no longer usable
- Gen 1's high critical hit ratios were no longer present.
Because all mons still had equivalent of 252 EVs in every single stat, offensive setup was very limited and a lot of mons had limited coverage or even no STAB at all, most mons in the game could stomach three neutral hits without fainting. So you had everything Resting left and right, turning battles into PP Stall and Spikes + Roar shitfests. At the top of this pile of shit stood Snorlax, taking advantage of also newly introduced Curse and Fighting type's continuing shittiness to easily let its user win against any team that lacked Snorlax on its own. Normal type in general was ridiculously broken in Gen 2, even more so than it was in Gen 1, with other ridiculous users like Blissey, Porygon2 and Miltank.

Most of the reason Skamory and Forretress are played is to provide a Snorlax resist. And yeah, item diversity does not exist, the only thing in Gen II that doesn't want to use leftovers is Marowak which requires Thick Club

I didn't really start playing competitive until X and Y, but the meta was kind of fun until the Landorus-T spam started. ORAS meta is pretty cancerous right now with all the autistic stall shit and all the fun stuff being banned.

I wish I played competitive back in Gen V. Weather teams are fun.

It can still be used, and Tyranitar+Excadrill still shows up a lot, but it's a pain in the ass since you have to keep periodically switching your weather setter in and out instead of just leading with it and calling it a day.

Can't speak to gen one, played but was to young for thd meta, but gen 2 meta was awful and I was awful at it. I still dislike snorlax and suicune because of it, and skarmory only recently got off my petty shit list.

Only in vgc and 6v6. Sun, rain and sand all do well in battle spot 3v3, and doubles. Hail is pretty unusable now, its one niche for ice body stalling simply doesn't work.

Gen IV before the Garchomp and Salamence ban were BAD

Gen 2. All they needed to do was ban Snorlax and it would have been salvageable.
