The hate only died down because people have moved on to newer Pokemon during the campaign trail, as well as awaiting the final evos for the starters. I take it the hate will still stay around for Poppmaid because of waifufags, just that its a different type of hatred.

The point is since it's part of the line, and Greninja is more popular, it will be picked over the other two by more people, making Froakie more popular. Chespin was liked more than Froakie until people saw its evolutions, then it became the least liked and least picked.

I remember I was kind of off put by its color scheme at first, but I still thought of it as cute because I find seals and sea lions cute, even the more sillier/fatter looking ones.

He kind of grew on me. It's just a sea lion pupper.

Shame its evolution tries its best to not be one, knowing to a extent what sea lions really are, they're just big water dogs in a sense. Curious as fuck and bite into anything, like to be lazy, but playful. Some are pretty, but they're arguably not the epitome of elegance. The maid sea lion just... feels like a woman clad in white that sheds what it previously was and its anatomy brushes me the wrong way. I'll still pick Popplio, but if the maid evolution turns out to be the only one he gets, I can't say I'm exactly thrilled by the thought.

Knowing there are some like me, I kinda wish we'd get split/day-night evos, but only because that would mean everyone would be happy and we wouldn't have such a need to create such a conundrum over final evos although I feel that's asking too much.

Popplio is the second worst starter ever, with the truly worst being Chespin.

It was mildly less popular than the other two, and people who noticed it wanted to force a meme where everyone rabidly hated it. Even websites like Kotaku joined in making articles about how everyone hates it.

I'm glad it died down, though. It's probably still the least favorite of the three but I'm fine with that as long as people aren't hating it for the sake of memes.
