Is there any reason to play the game instead of Showdown?

If you don't like the single player then sure. There's very little reason to breed/hack mons for multiplayer when you can just get them immediately on Showdown in addition to more rulesets.

Battle Spot is shit until VGC rules for 2017 are announced, plus it's much easier to playtest on Showdown, so for anything competitive, Showdown is the go-to.

If you mean from a purely competitive point of view there are a couple of reasons.

>want to partecipate in official tournaments
>don't like smogon restriction, and the AG tier is filled with megafugs and dark void darkrais anyway, while online you may find more variety
>you find more variety in general, it's not balanced metagame but you might find it more fun this way
>minor reasons are nicer animations or you simply want to see how your adventure bros fare online
