Definitely either Kanto or Kalos. Kanto Ash charged headfirst into anything and everything w/o giving a single fuck, and Kalos Ash is just so badass and more mature than any other iteration outside the movies (aside from still being oblivious to love).

Unpopular opinion, but I like Unova Ash the most. He fucked up a lot and the battles were often shit, but he was constantly training alongside his Pokemon or endangering his life for Pokemon.

There was that Venipede episode where a Venipede got stuck in a pipe, and Burgh warned Ash not to touch it because it could poison him. But Ash decided that no, the Pokemon's wellbeing was more important and helped it anyway.

Plus he didn't have an emo arc like he did in Kalos.

That's shitty development though. He regressed and had to learn not to be a shitty pissbaby. It was only created because the memefrog storyline needed drama, and to pretend as though Sawyer wasn't totally worthless as a rival.

And then after that arc, his issues are completely dealt with and never brought up again. I can get developing, but it makes it even more obvious that it was a shitty write-in for the sake of adding drama, and not to further his character in a meaningful way.

Like skip that whole arc and imagine they mastered Ash-Greninja without it. Ash and Greninja are exactly the same before and after.

Actually in Sinnoh Ash was much better at battle strategy and even adapted Pokémon Contest strategies to fit regular battles (on that note I miss Counter Shield).
