I disagree, they are both based on wolves.
The ears of rockwulf are the only thing that could somehow point to coyote and it's obviously just an artistic choice to match the neck rocks design.
Coat color indicates nothing since there are plenty subspecies for wolves.
Both wolves and Coyotes have lanky legs, only that Coyotes are smaller in size so of course the legs look more lanky.
Snouts and muzzle also vary a lot from sub specie to sub specie too.

Since wolves and coyotes are on the same genus it is easy to get confused when the pokemon we wanted don't look exactly like we wanted them to look.

Not even comparable and would literally never happen. Wolves and coyotes are in the same family while cats and owls are completely different things. So if a thing that looks like a wolf is called a wolf by its creators, then its a wolf.

So even if every feature can be found on wolves too, the fact that they are all together indicates it's based on a coyote (regardless of them being named after wolves).
Ok, I guess it's just what you see then against what I see. Hopefully when we learn their size it will help us clarify what they are more based on. Till then I guess this is Arcanine all over again.

Yeah, they would be a poison tree frog-based pokemon and a caribou-based pokemon respectively. Not the case here since every feature of rockwulf and most features of nightwulf can be found in both wolves and coyotes.
