This hour special has literally got SIX STRAIGHT EPISODES of build-up (pre-final league battle, league battle with Lysandre getting reading, and three main episodes) plus all the plot build-ups throughout XY&Z.

If they were to just downright cancel the hour special and move onto the SuMo anime, it would be the biggest blunder in anime history.

The difference is that this will be in a more class-like setting so it won't nearly be as awkward to develop the characters, its almost certain that Kukui/Oak will be like a Teacher that follows them around and teaches them which will round out the dynamic easier, there are plenty of anime with a massive cast that manages to work so i don't see why Pokemon can't do it, especially with a school theme.

Considering that Kukui is a Professor who focuses on moves and that Ash gets a Z-ring, i don't see why Ash wouldn't grow stronger by being his student and then for the non battle oriented characters like Lillie, they will have Oak who will teach them about Alola form Pokemon which is why Lillie has a Alolan Vulpix.
