Where do you get the implication that we join them? It says "battle" rival teams. Not join.

"battling rival teams" barely means anything at all.
For all we know, it could be a comment on the franchise as a whole

There is nothing there that is specifically about SM

But, if there really is a "rival team" that does in no way mean we get to join Skull, it could mean we're forced to join a group of people trying to stop Skull
For all we know, that could be just the same as the group of friends in XY

and i hope you realize people that write that sort of summaries very often have barely any more understanding of the games than they have to, mistakes are made.
These people are probably the worst source of information among people that could potentially actually have information
