I think it was more of a game design choice for gen one. Like most Mimics he wasn't supposed to kill you, but to annoy the fuck out of you and give you a scare. Electrode maybe won't K.O. much but he will outspeed, paralyze and then self destruct because fuck you.

exactly. it's pretty much a self-motorized ball, and when your body is a ball that's pretty much the optimal shape for speed. literally nothing is dragging you down so you can just charge up and roll anywhere. makes a lot of sense actually

After some calcs were done based on the damage it done to the pokemon in the trailer, everyone came to the conclusion that School form Wishiwashi has like 150 base SpAtk. Similar to how Solgaleo might have 150 base HP and Perfect Zygarde between 180 and 220.

Sunkern has the lowest overall base stat total with each stat being 30, to a total of 180.

Alakazam only gains +90 to its base stat total for whatever reason when Mega Evolving. I think the idea is that it already gained +10 to a base stat in Gen VI, but that hasn't stopped say, Ampharos. This inconsistency bothers me.

Shuckle is the prime example of extreme stats.
With the highest based defense of 230 rivaled by two megas and highest special defense of 230.
On the other hand it has a base speed of 5 and attack stats if 10

It damn well is. Compare it to Gengar. Both received a Mega Evolution in Gen VI. Alakazam's BST before Gen VI was 490, then it got extra SpD to boost its BST to 500. Gengar's had a BST of 500 ever since the Special split. So at their base forms, they have the same base stat total. They're supposed to be counterparts of some sort. Both have advantages against each other (Alakazam's Psychic vs. Gengar's Poison, or Gengar's Ghost vs. Alakazam's Psychic) and both are heavily Special oriented.

And yet... when Mega Evolving, Alakazam only gains +90 to its BST while Gengar gets the standard +100 like every other Mega. It's just nonsense. Ampharos, interestingly enough, also had a 500 BST, but got extra Def making it 510 BST, and then still got the usual standard +100 BST when Mega evolving, making its Mega Evolution a 610 BST Pokemon.

Blastoise's base speed is 78. That's actually really good for a pokemon that's considered to be a tank.

Same reason Rampardos isn't, not fast enough to make use of the high attack and too frail to afford to be slow. Haxorus is a bit better since it can at least scare out some slower special walls and use the opportunity to set-up, but without the boosts it's just not very good.
