Which Gen has the best sprites?

I liked seeing ferroseed spinning.

I always thought Platinum/HGSS had the best sprites.

Gen 5 reused some ugly ones from DP and completely re-drew all gen 3 mons for some reason.

The problem is that the 3DS isn't powerful enough to run actually good looking 3D sprites. Look at any Pokemon that has fire or smoke coming off of it (e.g.: Typhlosion, Magmortar, Rapidash, Torkoal) and you'll notice how bad they actually look.

Now look at the 3D console games. The models looked great (bar Infernape, which seems to have both modelled flame and particle flame). Another problem is how washed out the colours are on a lot of Pokemon.

Gen II definitely had some great sprites. Great to move away from Gen I's awkward perspective on a lot of Pokemon and actually using normal sized back sprites. Crystal's animations stood out over pretty much anything in Emerald and Gen IV due to Crystal actually using more than 2 sprites per animation.

The Gen 5 sprite of Cofagrigus and Garbodor are so fucking good.

Then the desaturated shitty 3D models of Gen 6 happened, even actively fucking up Cofagrigus' face proportions in the process.

The only one out of those I can understand people disliking is Torkoal's smoke, but it's still nothing terrible. Fire effects are cel shaded and they fit the models absolutely fine.

Console games aren't really worth comparing. You play those on a big screen, their details are more important.

Never got the hate for the gen V sprites. The pixelation isn't that much of a flaw and it's only really bad in a few cases, like Articuno.

But they're by no means the best. I'd give that honor to HGSS.

Has to be gen 2. Specifically crystal. Nearly all of them were perfect.
