The eastern routes felt like a huge journey battle royale as a kid.

It's still one of the biggest paths between towns in the franchise. The only longer trek I can think of is going through Mt. Coronet to Snowpoint.

What really seems smaller to me than as a child is the path between Olivine and Cianwood. It felt like a gigantic sea originally, but there really isn't much distance to it, and even if you don't use Repels it doesn't take long to cross.
