I wouldnt recommend going with the team that dominates the gyms near you since they'll usually fill up the gyms meaning you can't put anything in or do anything about it

That's bullshit. It doesn't matter. You will train in your own team's gyms and battle against the other two. It doesn't make a difference because by now all gyms are full and you can't just put in something to earn the defender bonus.

Ask yourself two questions.

Do you like the color blue/red/yellow? Then ask, do you like Articuno/Moltres/Zapdos?

If two of those answers match up, that's your team.

If there's a tie, do you prefer evolution/training/breeding? If there's still a tie, look at the team leaders and choose the one you think is the coolest. Or the one with your favorite corresponding Eevee. Or your favorite Gen 1 game.

Yeah, I live in alaska and I usually can get 5 gyms a day depending on how fast I can either prestige up to get a pokemon in or just take the gym from whatever team. Heard it's a bit harder to hold gyms in city areas and larger towns though.
