If you watch the early XY episodes, Serena's crush exists but its so subtle and rarely focused on aside from Serena blushing a few times. They we get big date, dancing, crossdressing episodes, Serena using Ash's ribbon, etc. Seems like the writers pushed it hard once people started liking it.

I think they'll remake it for Gen 7 or probably save it for next gen. In terms of atmosphere, Alola does seem to contrast with Sinnoh like how Hoenn contrasts with Kalos.
