Fuck man
That's a lot of fire types

2. Flying type
3. Fire/Water if it isn't the starter
4-6. Any combination of the remaining types (usually dual-typed, generally no duplicate types, no Normal/Poison/Dragon types)

In both competitive and casual play
1, 2, 3 FWG core. Ingame covered by a starter

I lay out all the types, and pick pokemon one by one until I get full coverage.
Jesus, OP's is the only one that makes sense here.
I just like to have Fire, Water, Grass and some pokemon that can use Fly covered. All the better if it's one of the above.
1.-Crobat after releasing starter
2-6 Crobat's harem of cutemons
>>28252100
For gen 6 I was able to just use whatever piqued my interest. For XY I'd see something I hadn't used before and just run with it, seeing how it did. Say what you want about the exp share, but I was able to use 10-12 mons on each play-through and keep them only moderately overleveld. Plus the low difficulty made shitmons not completely unbearable to use late game.
Although exp share needs to be adjusted in some way for future games (imo).

>>28252100
2 Special Attackers
2 Physical Attackers

>>28252100
In-game...I just pick fun pokemon. It's usually just a cluster fuck of "all attacking moves" with the occasional boosting/ status inducing move because it's pretty easy to get away with that for the story.
Competitively...A mix of what I like/ what I need/ something that doesn't get fucked by Lando-T, Sabes, and Kamikaze Bird. Followed by trial, error, and edits till I find a decent enough synergy.

>Stay away from uber/OU pokemon
>Make teams of shitty pokemon people won't expect
Gives me a good laugh to win with worse pokemon against the usual OU/uber stuff in battle spot.
My casual team is my competitive team. Its all for fun.

Yes, my taste is pretty much the same as any 13 year olds would be.
Nuzlocke style. The first pokemon of the first 5 routes/areas excluding duplicates. These 5 and my starter, of course. Though I have been known to drop a Rattata/Regional Bird for the first of a route later on to keep it interesting.
This, or I just pick up whatever I like that's unique from what's already on my team. I ran into a problem in AS for the first time since playing Blue, however. I got to the Elite 4 without realising that I only had 5 pokemon on my team. No one suited my fancy along the way. That, and I didn't have a Mega other than Swampert. I didn't even realise it until I was battling Wally on Victory Road and noticed that I wasn't outnumbering him like I normally do to the rival at that point in the game. Ended up picking up a Meditite and leveled him up for the E4. Good times.
I should have tried the E4 with only 5, though. That could have been fun.

this, too bad it brings me to have lots of ghost and steel types in my team

I teach my in-game team HMs so it really feels like we are on an adventure together. It doesn't really matter that moveslots are wasted because in game is easy. If no one on my team can learn one then I sub out as necessary.
Sometimes Fly can be a submon, but I usually like at least on in a region.
>>28252100
Pokemon I like who's types don't overlap entirely (unless it's a mono team), who's features I can interpret realistically, who fill a niche (one could Mega evolve, ones a starter, one I could realistically ride) and can use all the HMs.

Typhlosion, Noivern, Skuntank, Torterra, Seismitoad, Aggron

Sometimes when I already have them filled and still 1 or 2 spare slots, I use these spare slots for any pokemon that I like/feel special. Never needed HM slave.
>>28252100
I have two ways to make competitive teams
1. I choose a pokemon I like and make a team around it
2. I pick a solid FWG core or a Steel/Fairy core and fill with whatever's countering the current popular pick in meta
If it's for a fun tourney or to play with friends I just go full karenfag
For in-game teams I just pick whatever I like without caring for types or anything.
1. starter
2. early pokemon
3. early non-normal
4. something else near the 3rd gym
5. something else near the 4th gym
6. something that piques my interest before or near the 6th gym
7. something after the 7th or 8th gym to replace 2. or 3.
Reasonable type coverage achieved at the time of 4. or 5.

Which is why I'm hype to at least try Ninetales-A and Garchomp, they get at worst STAB neutral coverage on pretty much everything.

Wow that's exactly what I do to make a team I must be pretty autistic
- i buy both versions of a game whenever they come out: first version i play male and try to 100% the game, second version i play female and use the game for whatever i feel like
- starter pokémon (i try to pick the one that fits with the male trainer the best)
- early-game flying-type
- free slot (i try to pick a more "relevant" pokémon for this)
- grass-type
- water-type
- mythical pokémon/psuedo-legendary (if the generation has more than one mythical pokémon, it is chosen based on pokédex # as well as availability)
an example of my formula from generation i:
- charizard
- pidgeot
- raichu
- vileplume
- lapras
- mew/dragonite
so basically, i try to create the most "canon", or "default" teams on my main files
it's super-duper maximo autism i know, but it's really the only thing i sperg out on when it comes to pokémon
>>28252190
first post best post
>>28252100
I usually start with a fire type, a surfer/waterfall mon, electric or grass, and a flyer.
From there I just look at what types aren't covered by STAB moves and pick the rest of my team based on that.
>>28252100
Grass is shit. Fire is also pretty shit.
>>28254729
Is that a bad thing? Is it not special snowflake enough for you?
1. Water type
2. Non water-type Marine Pokemon
3. Water type
4. Non water-type Marine Pokemon
5. Water type
6. Non water-type Marine Pokemon
I'd say it's plenty autistic.
I just make sure I have a Water type and a Flying type, everything else is stuff I like just with no type overlap.
For example, my team in Platinum was Empoleon, Staraptor, Roserade, Gliscor, Gallade, and Weavile.
>>28256512
What non-water marine pokemon are there? Gamefreak seems to insist on everything aquatic being water type
Closest I can think is eelektross, which levitates in caves and isn't found in water
>>28256654
>Eelektross
>Malamar
>Crustle
>Cradily
>Dragalge
>Masqerain

>>28252100
I choose what Pokemon I'll use ahead of time. I tend to pick my favorites. However, I never overlap types, and I try to acquire my mons fairly evenly throughout the journey.
one starter mon
no more then 2 of same type
something for Swimming and FlyingStill havent come up with the perfect team of my favorites
>>28252100
I used to have a system where I'd get full coverage by including
>1 ground
>1 ice
>1 fighting
>1 dark
Each of these has a type only they can hit for SE (I don't count dragon-v-dragon or ghost-v-ghost because then you leave yourself open)
With those accounted for, I also have all types covered except for Water, Fighting, and Bug. So I use the remaining slots to cover those (usually means Grass and Flying) and I'm good.
But then Fairy came in, and now that's just one more type to consider, and now I have to sneak in a Poison or Steel type, which I've never really been a fan of.
>>28256654
Lugia
Literally all team arragment but OP's are shit.
My rule for in-game: try to not get 2 of the same type in my team
1. Poison pokémon
2. Steel pokémon
3. Pokémon that can learn Fly
4. Pokémon that can learn Surf
Evidently, can't wait for the dex to leak.
>>28252271
I do this too. Not because it adds a challenge or anything, I just prefer to use only four for some reason.
I try to get a good mix of types of Pokemon that I like. If I like 2 that conflict, I just take the one I like more. My ORAS team has gone like this so far:
1. Torchic -> Combusken -> Numel -> Camerupt
2. Zigzagoon -> Linoone -> Snorunt -> Glalie
3. Seedot -> Nuzleaf -> Roselia -> Lileep
4. Poochyena -> Mightyena -> Electrike -> Manectric
5. Ralts -> Kirlia -> Sableye -> Gardevoir
6. Wurmple -> Silcoon -> Dustox -> Whismur -> Loudred -> Carvanha -> Sharpeedo
I made things difficult for myself early on with no water type, but generally I plan to have in the end: Offensive Fire/Water/Electric/Ice/Ground types, and at least one of Dark/Psychic/Fighting/Ghost/Fairy in addition to those. I always have a defensive Grass type with Leech Seed, Giga Drain and a few status moves, and a defensive healer with Wish and Heal Bell or something similar.
>i get triggered if i have more pokes with the same tipe (i can get over one or two overlaps but only if they are second typings)
>one water one fire one elctric/grass (at least one, sometimes two)
>one that can learn fly
>on the first playtrough i always use the regional bird execpt for Unfezant, it was just too damn ugly
>all the pokemon have to have the gender i think fits them better,i have very few where i think both are acceptable
And of course poke i like
>>28252100
Fire
Water
Grass

Any (assuming they do not have thematic similarities to the previous 5)
No types can overlap.
>>28259778
Oh and i really struggle to use water types pokemon that seem out o place outside of water, it breaks my immersion. Same reason why i hate battling swimmers
>>28259026
I usually go by how many badges I have, thought I tend to settle on 3 or 4 maximum. I don't know why, but I feel like 6 is a superfluous amount when you're just playing through the actual game.
I like having a FWG core but it's not mandatory. Though if I have two of the types I'll almost always end up completing the core.
Overlapping types are pretty much the only thing I avoid because they really, really trigger my autism. I tend to avoid HM slaves, too.
So, I'm pretty much the only person on /vp/ who doesn't care at all about overlapping typings, right?
>>28259863

In an ideal case, my team looks like this:
>Grass-type
>Fire-type
>Water-type
>Electric-type
>Rock/Ground/Fighting/Flying-type
>HM slave / wild card
Most of the time I only train five Pokemon and thus the final member is just for field moves. All of my teams must have Surf and Fly, with the shittier HMs being reserved for HM slaves. I quite often end up breaking this formula tho, usually dropping either the Grass or Electric Pokemon. Water is the only thing that I absolutely MUST have in every single team.
Here are two examples of my ideal teams:

>Delphox (Fire)
>Swanna (Water, Surf, Fly)

>>28252100
Around Gen 5 I made a type chart in Excel that quantified the number of types each type is strong against on one axis, and weak against on the other. Then I build my team prioritizing the types with the most strengths and fewest weaknesses, and seek out pokemon that can offer those types while ideally having a second that hedges against at least one of the primary type's weaknesses. If I can't do that I will typically try to seek out one with a secondary offensive type my team is lacking, and try to offer that pokemon an attack that it can use as a hedge. Typically the team will include the starter, but over the course of the gens that have passed, I've taken to certain pokemon that have filled certain roles well, and am actually breeding replacements for new games, and adjusting previous teams to account for starters typing and filling in whatever may be missing afterwards.
