Yes, this means Snorlax trying to stand up through history was intentional.

Is it okay to ask questions on romhacks here? If told too I'm sorry and will delete this post.

I'm interested in playing the johto games again but decided to look into romhacks as I want something more difficult. What would you guys recommend in terms of a harder johto hack? Graphics are no concern to me, will play any version of the games.

So, you want to make a ROM hack? First, you need to decide on a ROM base: FireRed, Ruby or Emerald. There are various pros and cons to each, but in general FireRed has the most documentation and research, with Emerald hacking becoming an emerging art and Ruby being a piece of shit you should avoid at all costs because it was made by a GameFreak who don't know what they're doing.

Once you've chosen either FireRed or Emerald, download the following tools:

So can you only replace existing moves and pokemon? or can you do just about anything?
>>
>>28234077
You can add pokemon and moves if you want. Try in Gen 3 Suite. You'll have to create your own sprites, animations, and stats for both however so good luck.

A few questions in terms of taste. My base hack of Emerald uses 70 starter pokemon to choose from. The moment you choose 3, you are dropped into the world with them at lvl 30.
Now, with the release and concept of SuMo, I decided to play with the island Explorer idea. Here are my questions

1.Do I create multiple rivals essentially ( a hand full of trainers who get stronger as you progress) or just a fucking ton of ace trainers, bug catchers, youngsters and such.

2.What variety should I use for starters? I have many middle evos of Kanto and johto mons set now with crappie movesets and random assortment items

3. What types of Islands would you like to see, what excites you for exploring? Because Mt. Moon is nice for its moonstone, rare candy and fossil that are all on the way... but the rest of the cave was trash. What makes you want to go deeper?
>>
>>28234289
No use beating a dead horse anon... some people are lost causes.
>>
>>28233440
This is a HGSS hack I've been playing:
http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=347879

It's not much of a difficulty improvement other than a higher level curve and some gym leader pokes added/leveled up
>>
>>28235073
1. I've never seen a game do more than two rivals well, so to be safe, I'd stick to 2, no more than 3. You just don't get a whole lot of screen time to develop them and make them interesting characters if you have too many.

2.I'd say a variety of midstages is the way to go. Starters and regional birds are a safe bet as well as fully evolved rodents. Things like Luxio might be good as well. Ensure you've got a wide variety of types too, so don't go ham on grass/fire/water Pokemon since you already have the starters for those. Usually speaking, you can probably just use the Pokemon's natural moveset at the level you give them at, though, keeping STABs might be important.

3. More importantly than anything, make areas different and unique, not just from one another but from stuff you commonly see in games in general. Rock Tunnel was a slog because there was nothing that made it stand out from Mt. Moon before it and the Seafoam Islands and Victory Road after it. Perhaps instead of being just a cave, it's a crytal cave or a submerged cave that you have to dive new places to get to. Map design is also important. Don't pull a Mt. Moon where a lot of it feels extraneous and pointless, have it be more like Union cave or an Oreburgh Gate where the main part of it is pretty compact, but if you explore off the beaten path, there's stilll a lot to do.

Hope this helped.
>>
Do all the hacks use the same gym leader + HM progression formula? I'm just typing out some ideas and I think a pokemon game where you sort of go on quests and complete tasks to proceed might be interesting. Maybe a strong wild pokemon could act as a boss.
>>
>>28235073
1. 2 rivals is the upper limit I'd say, and even that mainly works when ones the main battling rival and the other checks your pokedex or whatever.

2. Mid evolved starters seem like a good fit. I'd say to include lots of mid evolutions. Helps feel like you're at a higher level, while still having room to grow.

3. Not sure one specific islands, but as for exploring, I usually get excited when there's rare pokemon in a particular spot or chamber, or when there's puzzles to gain access to rare items. Most of all, it's exciting when it's a place that's entirely optional, or even secret. Even discovering it should require a bit of exploring to help make it feel mysterious.
>>
>>28235665
>Strong wild pokemon boss

Uranium had something like that. Trouble is that you can catch it and get a huge advantage because it's 10 levels above your party.

You could do away with Gym Leaders and HMs though depending on how you go about it. The only main one you might want is Surf, and either Fly or something to fill the same function to go from town to town quickly.

Long story short, I haven't played a single Pokemon game after Gen 3, but I want to come back. I'm naturally thinking about playing Gen 4 next, but the problem is Pokemon games as they are just aren't challenging enough to keep me interested, so a 'hard mode' hack for Gen 4 (and potentially up too) is what I'm looking for. I looked through the 'Notable ROM hacks' pastebin on the OP, but which would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance guys.
>>
What's the best hack you ever played?
>>
>>28236315
Cuckold emerald
>>
>>28235688
I was thinking about doing the same. How bad would it be to not be able to capture the boss pokemon ? I don't like the idea of arbitrarly stoping players from capturing pokémons, but I don't want them to get strong pokémons just like that. Maybe having a low capture chance is enough.
>>
>>28236515
I'd expect Sun&Moon won't allow us to catch the totem Pokémon, also B/W2 never let you catch B/W Kyurem, so I think it's fine.
>>
>>28232428
How hard is it to make you own hack?
>>
So I'm working on a rom hack using the Emerald 650 base, and when I get to the part where Wally has to catch a pokemon, it gets stuck before his encounter begins. one the "...Whoa!" line of dialogue, to be exact.

Any clue what could be causing this? I did mess with the wild pokemon data in that route, but I assumed that as a special event it wouldn't literally rely on an encounter chance.

As a back-up plan, is there a way to just remove that whole event? Or will skipping it not trigger some important flags?
>>
Why is there no download for Xtreme Script Editor when I go to the link in the pastebin? The one the HackMew made. All I can download is Free Space Finder and nothing else.
>>
>>28236236
There's Flawless Platinum, which is modestly more difficult than vanilla and it attempted to be rebalanced, but also has some weird type changes like Empoleon being water/ice. Bloody Platinum is another one that's much harder, but I've never played it so I don't know too much about it.

As for HGSS hacks, the gold standards are sacred gold/storm silver that are quite a bit more difficult.

I had this idea for a fangame called Pokemon Topaz (Also, Pokemon Jasper as the secondary version). The cover legends are Raikou for Topaz and Entei for Jasper. It's essentially the B2/W2 of G/S/C, taking place 10 years or so after the original. The evil organisation (no name yet rip) want to capture the cover legendary beast and unlock it's true power (Probably mega evolution, but something else could be a possibility). Also, certain Pokemon have Johtoan forms. (I don't know how these'd play out, however)

Say how autistic this idea is if you wish.

Sounds pretty cool. You could link the plot back to Eusine trying to get Suicune in GSC with him pretty much doing the same thing or some shit.
>>
>>28238995
Yeah, Eusine would play a big role in the plot.
>>
>>28238941
Part of the fun in BW2 was the new gyms and routes. So making entire new areas could be done, but what if you just set the game with Mt. Silver in the middle of the map, instead of the far right?

for example, the player starts in Cinnabar (or maybe a newly created volcanic island nearby). You head up to Pallet Town, but then take a hard left and go to New Bark Town, which now hosts the first gym. Then head up to Blackthorn as the 2nd gym, before crossing over the mountains to Pewter as a 3rd gym. You could continue on in this way, adding a few new routes, but mainly just using existing routes and gyms in a fresh order, crossing between Johto and Kanto frequently.
>>
>>28239092
I like this idea. So Johto and Kanto's leagues would now be joined together?
>>
>>28237190
Fucking incredibly hard, if you expect your work to be half decent
>>
>>28239142
Another bit of story in this is that Raikou/Entei mega evolved and destroyed Ecruteak. Luckily, Morty and his ghost Pokemon sensed this before, leading people to safety. This incident caused Eusine to take intrigue. Doing whatever it takes to get Entei/Raikou in his hands. He sets up an evil team and assigns a man the job as a pawn leader. Basically covering up Eusine's whole involvement. Morty is also intrigued, and helps the player throughout the game.
>>
>>28239142
yeah, but you wouldn't necessarily make the player go through all 16 gyms in order to face the elite 4, just the usual 8.

You could make a new route going over Mt. Silver, but since it's an early-game route that you'll be using to cross between quite often, spin it as super-touristy. Kinda like how Mt. Everest has gotten full of casual tourist shit in parts - hella tents and markets set up, hotels and spas, etc. NPCs saying how great it is, other saying they think it's destroying the natural beauty, etc.
>>
how do you give a pokemon name a symbol at the end? Like how Nidoran has the male and female symbol. What would I have to do to make my own symbol for a pokemon?
>>
>>28238941
You've just reminded me of a shitty edgy hack that was made years ago which was also called Pokemon Topaz, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dofogo5FeY
Do what this anon said >>28239092 and add some new areas and update them, so it's not just Johto again. Is this going to be a romhack or an essentials game?
>>
>>28239519
Essentials game, if it ever actually happens. It's just ideas for now.
>>
>>28239401
In the ROMs, every character is represented by a hex code. Most Pokémon editors worth their salt should have Table.ini files which change the hex value of a string into a letter. You could go in their and assign one of the unused random characters like the Swedish accents or whatever and change that to your new symbol, assign that to something in the ini, change the name, and then manually edit the graphic for the letter in the ROM itself to look however you'd want it to.
>>
>>28239176
>>28237190
If you can do everything on your own, it's not hard, just extremely time consuming.
>>
So... how do you animate bitmaps in essentials?

I'm using Yape and the closest thing I got is a configuration map called "charmap" in the common file which is pic related. I tried putting in the symbol i'm using in replacement for lowercase "a" which is 0xD5 in Hexidecimal just to test it but it doesn't show up in the editor whenever I put it in Bulbasaur.
>>
>>28239928
>>28240483
wait. I have a table.ini in Gen 3 Tools. But I'm confused as what you mean by
>You could go in their and assign one of the unused random characters like the Swedish accents or whatever and change that to your new symbol
>assign that to something in the ini

aren't they the same thing? What's the difference?

I'm also lost on
>change the name
>>
>>28238931
Thanks. Appreciate it.
>>
>>28239928
Nevermind. I got it to work in Gen 3 Tools but for whatever reason it won't save. There isn't even a save option anywhere what gives? But once I got that figured out all I need to do change the graphic.
>>
>>28235278
>1. I've never seen a game do more than two rivals well

BW1 handled it well with three, they just needed to stretch the battles out so you didn't have two rival battles between each Gym. I agree with not having fucking ten though.
>>
>>28238941
This is an excellent idea except for the 'Johtoan' forms. Johto has historically been part of a landmass with no adaptations [Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh are all part of 'japan' in the Pokemon world], so it'd be strange to retcon them in, especially when the 3 regions near Johto haven't had forms retconned in. It'd just be easier and more natural to retcon in new megas and introduce vanilla 'formes' [like Wormadam, Rotom, etc have], perhaps you could introduce new forms for Raikou and Entei to make them feel more prominent within the story.
>>
what's the difference between normal VBA and VBA-M?
>>
>>28239928
never mind again. Apparently it did end up working in game because it was indicated by "Bulbasaur 's" with a space in between the name and the 's instead of a normal Bulbasaur's. My question is why did it show up as a space and not the symbol I replaced. I replaced à with my new symbol so wouldn't the symbol in game be "Bulbasaurà's" and not a space?
>>
>>28241442
wait I screwed up. It didn't end up reading my new symbol... I forgot I put a space in before my symbol and it recognized the space only.
>>

>>
>>28241853
Yeah, I know that, but the hack changes it to something else, Its already level 55 but still doesn't evolve. The hack itself is Pokemon Crystal made by some "Morfeo" in 2006, But I don't know if that helps, it just adds the 255.

>>
>>28240749
Yeah, Johtoan forms were an iffy idea.
>>
>>28242424
>>28238941
>>28240749
I think johtoan forms are doable, but you have to be careful.
Arbok actually has a "Johtoan form".
It's markings vary in each region through Hoenn.
One could argue that Bellossom is a is a Johtoan mutation, due to the discovery of the Sun Stone not found in Kanto.

You'd have to make small changes instead of things like Vulpix, where the type changes completely, and there has to be good reason for doing so.
They still have to strongly resemble they're Kanto counterparts, too.
No Johto Pokémon or Pokémon with Johto split evos should be considered.

Some good candidates are Pidgey, Spearow, Rattata, Poliwag, and even some fossil mon.
>>
>>28238941
Johtoan forms sound cool. But like Max said, keep the changes relevant. For example: Due to the rainbow trails and ashes Ho-oh leaves behind while roaming around Johto, the Spearow soaring the Johto skies strangely reacted to these and adapted an affinity to Fire.

Another idea: Suicune's continuous search for impure water in Johto has led it to factory waste dumps on the city side, where Grimer and Muk were then indirectly cleansed, turning them to pure Water-types.
>>

>>
>>28243591

>>
>>28243626

I don't know if this is the best place for this question, but seeing how this is a more technically minded portion of the board perhaps someone will be aware of this problem.

A long time ago I got into RNG abuse pretty hard. I enjoyed it, it was fun and had just the right amount of challenge, so I went at it for about a year and collected a very sizable amount of RNG abused pokemon. In this time I used a piece of software called IR GTS BW to store my RNG'd pokemon, as well as ones I traded for, and also to clone them as needed. When gen6 came out, I transferred a bunch of my RNG'd pokemon up en masse using PokeTransporter, and for a while was content.

Well, I went back to the old tricks today and wanted to dig out a couple of older mons that I haven't seen in a while and discovered that I could not get IR GTS BW to work any more. Specifically, according to a thread I found on Project Pokemon, IR GTS BW no longer works at all because GameFreak pulled the gen5 GTS down and even though IR GTS BW transfers from your personal computer to your DS it still has to do some communication with the official servers beforehand. As a result, it appears that my entire library of RNG'd pokemon is basically stranded on my computer for all eternity, and this makes me sad.

Long story aside, what methods are there to get gen5 and gen4 .pkm files onto gen6 games nowadays? Is there a suitable replacement to IR GTS BW that completely intercepts the DS communication and can still be used?

- how I can get a politoad instead of poliwrath
- how can I get mew and when
- how to get the gengar with all these circles
- can I still get a shiny ghastly on a sunday?
- are mega evos permanent?
- is mega gengar shiny version white?
- how to get mega pikachu
- how to get charmander/squirtle
- I couldnt beat rhydon in the cave but when it seems I skipped the event somehow, how can I still get a moonstone?

Sorry for these many questions

Reborn is pretty good in gameplay and challenge, but story is kinda edgy, so you go if you want to have good battles.
Rejuvenation is a complete rip-off of Reborn for the first half, but samme logic as above applies.
Uranium is overrated, but go for it if you like fakemon. Still, story sucks. A LOT. Also battles and level curves are very badly designed
Insurgence is for in case you want to satiate your urge for alolan forms, since it has delta forms.

While whether story of those games are good or not, I feel it's still better than official mainline games (none surpass Mystery Dungeon though)
Only fangame with actual bad story to the point you would lose neurones so far is Full Moon.

I'm just a bit annoyed by having to keep a third of the team locked to a pair slaves. Still I've been looking for a while and there doesn't seem to be anything that lets you use the HMs without pokemon that have them.
Shame, there's so many cool new things I'd want to have around.

>Essentialsfags have such low taste that they'll actually suggest playing Rejuvination

>>28245910
It's only divisive because some people give it a free pass on the cringeworthy story and very-obviously-fakemon designs because 'oh my god, it's fan made and finished' or because '9 YEARS?!'.

It really is a subpar game. You can still have fun playing it, but it doesn't make it any less trash

>I feel it's still better than official mainline games

Sorry, just discarded your entire opinion because of that. You're either ridiculously underage, and want to play a ""mature"" Pokemon game, or want to play a Pokemon game with a ridiculously contrived cliched piece of shit story. I've played all of those, bar Rejuvenation, and the story has sucked in every single one.

Being darker, or more complex than mainline Pokemon stories does not make it better, especially when the person writing it can't write for shit

Not that anon but I think there could be decent albeit darker themed games. Just don't overdo the plot and make it practical.

War time pokemon
>pokemon used for wars (which is canon)
>promotes the usual friendship with pokemon since they are your brothers in battle
>get to see the horrors of war so it also has the usual peace message
>instead of gyms it's military compounds
>trainers are stray soldiers or deserters
>the Evil Corporation can do what they always do: steal powerful pokemon, sell them to the highest bidder to promote the war and make a profit

It's dark but it's it has all the messages and usual pokemon themes.

I want a Pokemon fan game that takes place in a metropolis, but the only ones that exist are too annoyingly in-your-face SJW, to the point where it detracts from the Pokemon aspect of the game.

I had an idea to create a Pokemon game that takes place in a metropolis, but isn't completely grimdark and anti-society (showing both the positive and negatives of city life) which actually features SJW hipster types as the evil team.

Would anyone be interested?
>>
>>28251200
If it's as good as your digits, sure
>>
>>28251200
I'm not really sure they'd be that compelling as villains? It sounds like they'd be more annoying than an a credible threat to the player. I guess that's up to how you portray them, though.
>>
>>28251200
The villains don't seem that good. Like, unless you do them like a Team Plasma sort of way? Maybe misguided people that seek equality, or reforms, but are being a bit too extremist. The problem with SJW is that they are either hypocrites or don't focus in the actual issue. You could do with villains that are actually adressing the actual issues, but are using the wrong means.

Like, I dunno, factory is causing pollution? Blow it up. Those superenterprises are using forced labor from pokemon and shit? Take it down. Big companies are taking advantage of the population, manipulating them and doing hostile takeovers and stuff like that? Steal from them.

Stuff like Robin Hood, or maybe with some strange sense of morality behing them. Villains being well-intentioned extremists, instead of SJW that never get anything done and most of the times worse the reputation of people that actually want true justice to happen.

You could still keep the Hipster theme like a motif or in their actions/mannerisms somehow. Kinda like team Galactic are astronauts, Plasma are knights, Aqua are pirates, Skull are street punks and so on
>>
>>28251301
Here's the idea I've been playing with.

Since the "region" is much more urbanized, wild Pokemon have become much rarer and Pokemon are bred and sold (with regulatory commissions) but younger people are less inclined to be able to afford stronger ones. A revolutionary leader appears and preaches a stateless, moneyless world where all Pokemon and resources will be shared by the people of the city, rather than privately owned.

They'll start out stealing Pokemon and performing various acts of armed terrorism using Pokemon in what they believe to be revolutionary disruption of "the system" that "oppresses" them. What you'll find out later is that their R&D is developing a system where all Pokemon are held in a public database similar to the PC system, and all the Pokemon on it would be the public property. The stolen Pokemon are kept on this database, and to give the team evil points, disposed of if they're not powerful enough. They'll also experiment with mind control technology to use on humans and Pokemon.

At the end of the story, the team will have successfully completed "The Revolution" by destroying the city's financial infrastructure and creating a device which deactivates all Pokeballs, requiring people to use their "Social Pokemon System." They'll have imprisoned/enslaved those who fought against them as counterrevolutionaries, and it'll be up to you to navigate through downtown and defeat the leader/deactivate the machine, which will be powered by the box legendary.

You get involved, plotwise, because they're very hostile to other young people who don't share their dream. They're outwardly hostile to anyone who caught their Pokemon the "traditional" way and see them as oppressors.

And lastly, it'll be obvious through their dialogue that most of them are too dumb to fully grasp the repercussions of what they're doing, and they're only doing it to seem like caring people to their peer groups.

It's subject to change.

How do I go about making a pokemon hack that centers around islands and not the mainland? I don't want it like the Sevii islands in FrLg where a cruise is a jump cut to each that'll feel too isolated. I want the player to travel to one another. But not by surf like in RSE where everywhere could be a wild encounter.

I was planning on using a sailboat to replace both the bike and surf like how in Gen 1 HM's were originally gonna be hand tools. I would imagine it's rather simple to put surfs functionality into the bikes instead and replace the bikes graphics with a sailboat but I'm lost on how to actually do that however.

Another issue I have is how to have only select areas(or tiles) of water be wild encounterable and not the entire ocean like patches of grass on land.

Does anybody have any idea on how to do this themselves or know any tutorials regarding anything that has to do with this kind of hacking? I would be much appreciated.
>>
>>28251916
Make the sailboat only areas currents while the encounter water is just water.
>>
>>28251916
there's tons of scripts for changing HMs into items. Look on pokecommunity
>>
>>28251916
You could cheat by making a map that looks like water, but has the movement permissions of a regular land map. This way you can use the bike on it and set up some tiles to work like grass. Any decent advance map tutorial should cover this.
>>
>>28247398
Shit, I'd like to play that game
>>
>>28252075
I'm gonna do what >>28252070 said and keep the bike and make the sailboat a separate graphic than being part of the players. If I can somehow make water function as grass there has to be a way to cancel out the wild encounter functionality on regular water tiles and put it in custom ones of my own.

Why not use Team Rocket? It is based on the basic desire for power, rather than an ideal, so any disbandment it suffers might end whenever a new powerful gang leader / executive group takes control and gives profitable jobs to their grunts and agents.

Unless you have a specific idea about a team with genuine ideology and motivations (like Plasma or Galactic), you could just stick to the basics.

Or, if you parallel B2W2, have a Neo Team Rocket with a twist on its methods or motives, like B2W2 did with Black Plasma and White Plasma. Maybe the new Rocket leadership actually has good intentions? Maybe they are far more sinister, and the classic Rocket Executives come back to help you dethrone the new bad guys? How you handle your antagonist Team means a lot for the story, and too often do the hackers just choose an elemental type and run with it without much of a backstory for the organization.

Hipsters are the motif. I just want them to be incredibly fun to take down. I'll have them say things like "bae." The reason hipsters IRL are so impotent is because they don't have the means to enforce their ideologies, but in the Pokemon world, there's Pokemon-armed terrorism.

Other than that it's just your regular, "new generation" Pokemon game, although I've set out to give more attention to things like charcters, plot and game environments. I posted a thread on Pokecommunity today but I didn't want to be that guy who comes in here to advertise so I figured I'd just throw up some screens.

Nono, it's like this: there are two types of fangames. Rom hacks are, well, hacks of roms. Essentials games are ones made through the RPG maker. They are like a separate game that is not derived from a rom. You download, extract and play. There are a few other differences though.

>>28266227
No, no, I haven't played Zeta yet. Forgive me for mentioning it on this thread, but the game I was referring is Pokemon Rejuvenation.

Oh yeah! I am gonna make a Dark essentials game with an actual good story! It's gonna have character developements, actual likeable characters, a bunch of the cast of ambiguous morality, like two chaotic neutral guys/gals, and, like, a Wally-like person and shit!

You know what? I'm gonna make the final boss have a motherfucking good A.I. using a fucking Mega Rayquaza and a team of smogon-banned-to ubers mons. He is gonna need to be defeated, like, thrice in a row! There will b Chaos Rings' music and shit during that battle as the buildings are falling, fire is raining from the sky, people are riding pokemon like dragon riders and groups of players are fighting each other out as if there is a civil war is going on!
>>
>>28266797

Maybe it's just that Insurgence and Reborn have messed with my abillity to recognize edge, but Uranium doesn't seem too bad. although i'm only at the 6th gym, so there's still plenty of time for it to shit the bed.
>>
>>28267071
I don't think edgy nor these games are actually that bad. I mean, sure, none of those have a good writing, but they really have been fun games. I think it's more like... they tried to do story, but that's not their forte.

Like, I played other fangames, but most of them are low quality, have bugs, lags, low speed and my computer is a gaming PC.

Those guys of Insurgence, Reborn, Uranium, are on the higher side of quality, but while they do this programming majjykks I don't really understand, they lack in other aspects. Take Uranium for example, if they had a good art team, they could have designed better pokemons. If they had good players to test it out, like people from here that point out the problems in the game, the level curves could have been better arranged.
Reborn has good programmers, has an idea of dystopic edgy thingy, sure it's made for tumblr and all, but if they had someone to focus on the story or with more experience, they could have pulled off a far better story.
Insurgence is another example of that. They have this story in mind. You can see they thought ahead the plot points and how things will play out, but they aren't good with the execution. They lack the subtleness needed for it to actually flow well, due to that, their characters act a spontaneously on some times and exposition is doing very forced in some points.

It's like those games have their potential, but they didn't balance out the team behind it well. If they had more beta-testers, people that didn't give only praises, but pointed out the bad points as well, they could have pulled off amazing things.
>>

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about either release.
>>
Guys, I'm looking a lot for people who can make fakemon concepts and people who can make fakemon sprites for my game. Of course, I don't mind paying, but where can I find these people (other than in DeviantArt)?

Thanks!
>>
>>28272316
If you can't make the Fakemon yourself then don't have any.
>>
>>28266957
Eh, Ethereal Gates is leagues better than any other Essentials game with its writing, but it's still a mark above even the edgiest mainline games
>>

Images?
I like your stuff bro.
Also, checked.
>>
>>28262939
Oh wow, I actually tried it, and while I hate Essentials with a passion, this one actually has promise. It runs at full speed on my toaster with few frame drops.

The engine obviously needs a lot of work, I wouldn't play a finished game that felt like this, but for a tech demo this is pretty damn good, it both looks and runs better than Essentials. Hopefully whoever expands upon the project makes you walk faster than Gen 4 though.
>>
>>28272000
>I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about either release.

If you're making a Plus version in a different engine, and said Plus version is going to be a lot more advanced, why make the vanilla version in the first place?
>>
>>28272000
Woah Max, that is serious feature creep. Don't try to cram more content into your games until it's finished or you'll never be able to keep up. Especially don't abandon what you've already done if you're chasing the feature creep dragon.

Also this >>28273143

You're promising the world here. Your project is already ambitious enough - don't start piling on more responsibility before you're able.

Before you dismiss this hack as stupid or not worthy of your time, I would like to let you know, this is what I would like to call a "comedy" hack. This hack isn't meant to have a nice unique storyline or loveable charactors. It is meant for someone to be able to come home to after a long day and be able to sit down and laugh a bit at the sheer stupidity involved in the making of this hack.

SpriteKit and the new tilemap feature in iOS 10.
It's brilliant, but I need to actually be able to get the individual "grass right upper corner", "grass middle middle", "grass bottom left corner" etc. tiles separately, and on many of the tilesets I've seen, simply slicing 16x16 squares doesn't always get them as I need them.

Pokemon games don't really lend themselves to good writing or deep plots. They're just too limited by their expectations and the limitations of the medium of romhacking. You could never get someone emotionally invested in a hack.

No, in Xcode. I'm not building the game on a phone. Plus, SpriteKit is on macOS Sierra as well.

Are there any good Pokemon generators for gen 3 roms?

I wanna take another stab at the Hoenn Frontier without having to raise competitive Pokemon in third gen.
>>
>>28279483
I have to disagree, Gale of Darkness had itself a good plot, not revolutionary, but it was better than what we have at the times.
And if there is an army of people invested in Undertale of all things, I'm damn sure a good writer could make a pokemon NPC interesting enough to garner some attachment.
>>
>>28280361
I feel like Gale's writing was good because a lot of it was funny. And Undertale is a whole different beast, did you not see me say a lot of the prior expectations of Pokemon games keep them from having good plots? It's because anything deeper than the shallowest character is automatically written off as edgy because Pokemon characters and writing are usually very bright and cheery. It's just a very hard formula to break, you know? Nobody has managed it so far in the 10 or so years romhacking has been around.
>>
>>28279483
Mainline games? Sure

Mystery Dungeon on the other hand....
>>
>>28281497
Oh, for sure. Mystery dungeon games have some of the most heart-wrenching moments in video games, period. But mainline games evoke no feeling.
>>
>>28281559
Alright, at that I agree. Mainline's story isn't good. For me, and maybe just for me, most fangames are actually better than them even with their plot holes and stuff like that.

I feel that if they got the people that are in charge of the manga's story to write the plot of the games, I think it would be a big step in the right direction. The manga has well-thought up points, variable cast, nice battles, stuff like that. The games are kinda shallow in comparison.
>>
Is there any rom hack/fan game where your rival is actually twins and every time you fight it's a double battle? If not, you're welcome.
>>
>>28280361
Undertale was a perfect storm of appealing to several pre-existing cancerous fanbases. It's probably not the best thing to use as a baseline.

Yo, pay attention to this. >>28284219. Many people reject critics like that. You must learn from them. This guy is right (except for the overworld that's a matter of taste).
Watch out for walls of texts. Things like that may detract from the gameplay experience. You need to balance out situations like that to avoid being tedious. Your game has a story, but you need to make it flow.

Same reason for that dialogue of not letting kill the guy. Things must have reasons and buildups. This is the type of overexused excuse that nobody ever likes and make no sense.

People are going to judge you and not everything is gonna be praises, but you must learn from those things to avoid doing the same mistakes as everyone else

He won't listen. I've seen him on PokeCommunity before and he refuses to learn from critique. He's convinced his game has no flaws and is best done his way. Don't bother.
>>
>>28284845
Oh god! So much potential... wasted.

I mean, at least Rejuvenation guy learned one thing or two from critics considering the retcons he does each update. It is a mess, yes, but at least he once in a while does a step in the right direction. compared to previous versions.

Well, I will see to it what will happen to this Symphonic Horizon. Hopefully it will have its upsides.
>>
>>28284918
What potential? It's all commissioned.
>>
>>28284971
I mean it like this: this guys doesn't listen nor learns from critiques. If we go by that, he will be like one of those guys that will get angered by negative views on the game while the fanboys will keep praising him and say things like ''don't mind this guy''. He will do an anime story for a pokemon game, full of japanese cliches and on and on.
Maybe at some point much later he will understand that this is not good and that he could have done something much better, but by that point there will be no turning back whatsoever because everything will have been done already
>>
>>28285021
And because of that, literally the only good part of his "games" are the commissioned artwork. That isn't his potential, that's the artist's potential

There's no point is being bummed out about it because it will never change
>>
>>28285085
Hmmm... I guess you are right.

I'm releasing MMercury without these features to focus on the game itself rather than the features. By the time of release 1.0, the features I listed will be attainable and I can port over the maps and story.

The only really edgy and retarded fangame that I know of is Reborn.
Insurgence isn't edgy, it's serious and it sets its tone somewhat well but the writers aren't good enough.

Reborn, on the other hand:
>wacky, colourful characters
>hyper dark murderers
>pseudo-intellectual masterminds
>2deep4u misanthropes

>characters lose their traits and usefulness depending on the plot
>rape
>mindrape
>everyone hates their family
>pointless suicides

>all the dialogue is written in low-tier fanfiction fashion

It's all tumblr characters with tumblr projections on reality. Tone is all over the place and everything is horribly written.

The most trouble you'll get is stumbling around looking for the right files the first time. Everything is in plain text and you don't need any tools so I'd say it's even easier than editing Pokémon in Gen 3.

After you've done 2-3 it becomes easy enough that you don't need to think while doing it.

I'm a bit confused why you're even mentioning the + version now if you're not planning on implementing it until the game is already finished... unless you're actually really far along already?

In Reborn you have hints that some characters were molested or sexually abused. It's not even subtle because they can't write subtle.

And how does most of it apply to Insurgence? The dark mode is not edgy, it simply removes the kids gloves.

>cults experiment on pokemon to create the perfect specimen
Mainline didn't do this, definitely.
>zealots are crazy
Groundbreaking.
>people die in sacrifices to evil gods

>>
>>28295773
Yo, calm down dude. No reason to act like that and no reason to try to offend me. You have your point of view, I have mine.

As someone who played both games, my opinion is that they aren't that different. It IS edgy in dark mode to me just like it is forced upon us. For you it isn't.
And do you sincerely believe it isn't edgy? Game starts with people talking about how dark the times are, protag is about to be sacrificed in a cult and we have to pick up blood months old from the previous sacrifices that wasn't cleansed the spot for weeks. Another is sacrificed right off the bat few minutes into the game. How isn't this edgy to you?

Majority of the game has forced dialogue, bad writing and overuse of how ''bad'' things are and how ''dark'' it is and villains doing ''evil'' things.

Also everything you just said is your distorted vision. Crazy zealots are terribly put in there. You just mocked the sacrifices concept while using to defend your point of view, when instead you make it seem they are even more shitty. What was the point of parasatic virus being parasatic virus? And then you use the last situation when during the rest of the game people are dying?

Are you really defending something here or are you just trying to bait people?
