What I'm asking is, Is there anything interesting or new that can be done anymore? If they're competent then they're a Mary Sue. If they have any relation to existing characters they're a self insert. If they have any tragedy they're edgy. It seems like your only option is to make a one-dimensional unimportant NPC and that's boring by default. How do you create characters that are supposed to fill certain roles without falling into the pitholes?

I'll repost mine from the last thread since it didn't really go anywhere. I don't think it's very Mary Sue, but I don't know.

But her name is Alex, and she was born in Sunyshore City where her father was the gym leader before Volkner, and was also an electric gym. Her first Pokemon is a baby Shinx that grew up with her, and when she's 8 they move to Johto, and when she's 12 she starts her journey, picking Totodile as her starter. She's a pretty happy girl and tends to get along well with the trainers she runs into. She's not out to catch them all, not really out to win a League, at least at first, she just catches a select few and focuses on being friends with them. She challenges whatever is in front of her if it strikes her as interesting enough.

Everyone wants to be the guy, no one wants to self-insert themselves into someone boring. Making a believable, non-cringy progression of exceptional ability is the hard part.

I'm more suspicious of "everyman/woman" characters, especially when they're the eyes and ears for the reader of a more extraordinary character. Write about Sherlock through his own eyes as opposed to writing about the guy through Watson.

Ok, I have been thinking of a fangame with 3 playable protagonists, I think I can post about the second of them here.

Name: John
Background and shit: Son of a family that owns something akin to a ''Day Care Emporium''. Uncle is a powerful trainer while his mother took advantage of the business to also research Pokemon genetics (the source pokemon were from eggs trainers didn't want).
Recently got better of an illness and decided to start an adventure (journey). Starter pokemon is a shiny Eevee, present from his uncle, who acquired it through breeding.
John has access to early breeding in the story and due to products of his mother's research, it is more quick for him to breed. However, he can only use Eevee, eeveelutions and normal-type pokemon at the start of the journey. As the game progresses and powerful opponents are defeated, John is allowed to use typings of the defeated opponent that mach a previously owned eeveelution. Ex.: has a Sylveon, but cant use fairy-types aside of it. Beats fairy gym and now he can.

Well, John is being hard to find justification for it. Guess it would be something like loyalty to the eevee or being inexperient. Dunno.

Other two are more easy. Sasha is a daughter of an Elite 4 member, so she would focus on her favorite type (which the player would choose at the start) but would open up exceptions in her team or exclude those exceptions during the story progression at different times. Player wouldn't choose those points because she is a bit impulsive.
Starts the journey for the challenge of beating all gym leaders.

Third protagonist is more of a mute Link, but sometimes would display dialogues and actions against the player's will. Gender is determined by the player, but name isn't. Would come from an orphanage and unlike the other two, he/she would come from the poorer part of of the region.
Starts a journey with two friends from the same orphanage to help it.

He was praised and cherished for being a great trainer speciall after his mom and dad were killed by Geovanni, but turns out, Silver comes and tells him that they are brothers, and the guys Giovanni killed kidnapped him as a kid.

For example, when Sasha and John meet, they would clash since John would be distrustful of her and Sasha not having time to lose.

John's mother would force him to breed at least a decent Eevee before setting off to more dangerous parts of the region due to being a bit protective.

Third protagonist wouldn't meet them right away, but would be referenced to the other two by authorities due to his involvement in foiling some plans.

Likewise, the ''stopping the bad guys thing'' wouldn't be restricted to them since I have been thinking of making it more with a time-travel plot. Nothing Zelda-like, more like Mystery Dungeon.

Think it of a Broken-Age thing. You can progress to some point individually, but to keep progressing further in the game/end the current arc you would need to reach the same point with the 3 characters.

Since time-travel is waaaaay too complex to keep interfering left and right and paradoxes, loops, shit, it would be more in the lines of the multiverse theory - altering the current timeline doesn't change the alternate future.
Consider it like this: we have bad guys from the present and bad guys from the future. Both need to be stopped and few characters came from the future to help or hinder that.

I'd be interested to get some feedback on an OC that's been knocking around inside my head for a couple of years now. Especially since I've been concerned about accidentally making a character that's too perfect/overpowered or a Mary Sue, so I'd really appreciate /vp/'s thoughts.

I think she'd only have a couple of badges, most likely ones from mostly those types as well (Thunder Badge, Rainbow Badge, Bolt Badge, Insect Badge, Plant Badge, Voltage Badge)

This is Shawn (18) he grew up in Hoenn with my other OC, Captain Deadlock (captain of pokemon army) and fight many battles that change the world. But this is his Shadow form one of the many strong forms Shawn posses. He gained this form after meeting Darkrai and asking him for more power. Darkrai became part of Shawn and lends him his energy but he only uses it when he has to because he can't control Darkrai energy and goes beserk hurting his friends by accident. Everything he goes dark mode and he sees his friends get hurt he gets really sad so he never uses it. Right now he is using it against the final boss battle (hoopa unleash + all shadow legendaries) where Shawn almost dies but his love for his girl friend (her names Taylor and theyre not actually dating but she likes him a lot) overcomes death and together he fuses with his mewtwo (already in dark mode so it's basically mewtwo Shawn darkrai) and turns into the black mewtwo from Pokken Tournament but with darkrai features. He unleashes his ultimate move called Death Storm and destroys Hoopa-Unbound hoopa converts back to original and Shawn catches it with a Pokeball and crushes the pokeball in his hands because hoopa was a incarnation of evil memories Shawn had like when he was a kid and his dad was really mean to him and memories of all the friends he lost through out his journey. After he kills hoopa he has sex with Taylor (blonde 17 years old tan skin blue eyes nice firm boobs bubble butt) he touches her all over the place and licks her

No, what I meant was that those are what I considered to be the signs of a Mary Sue character; as in, you don't necessarily need them, but they do make one think "is this character a Mary Sue?".
Plus, the matter is more because of how badly-written those characteristics usually are.

I made up a little character to use when me and my friends tried Pokemon themed D&D.

Her name is Bluebell.
11 years old
From Viridian City
Lives with her parents, who aren't strong Pokemon battlers and prefer to keep Pokemon as pets. Her family has an elderly Weedle as a pet that has never evolved.
She likes grass and bug type Pokemon best and grew up playing in Viridian forest.
She traveled down to Pallet town to start her Pokemon journey and earn gym battles.
She picked Bulbasaur.

That's all I have so far, but she's fun to draw and I think I finally got her design decided.

It's difficult. Possible, but difficult.
In the case of a tribe like the Draconids, unless it's explicitly stated like this:

Then it's pretty safe to have a go at it. As long as that OC is not related to any character that canonically have no family.

However, don't make that particular OC too important without a good justification. Doing that is a good way to earn a collective groan from people.

There was never a real unique goal in mind when I made her. The game was just our characters going through the Indigo League anime style.
I suppose Bluebell would like to catch em all and probably eventually end up on the contest circuit.
She'd collect a few badges here and there when it's not too much work, but she's not interested in being the best battler.

I guess her progression as a character would involve her learning to listen to her friends and her pokemon instead of being so bossy. She needs to learn proper teamwork.

Now, for your question: Pokemon Full Moon is a fangame. The game has good art, but by far the worst writing in all fangames I have ever seen. Luna is the protagonist, intelligent yet bullied girl that ran away from home, etc.
I thought such introduction was misleading and gave the game a chance.
I was wrong, the introduction does it justice. Luna is by nature ''an angel'' for everyone else. Anyone who is not on her side is automatically evil and so on.
Her romance with another guy is very forced. Enemy team is doing things for evulz and so on. If you watch a playthrough of the game, in the 5 first minutes you will get an idea of where this leads to.

That aside, art is gorgeous. Still playing it to see where it goes

I'm still working on my trainers' backstories, but what I have so far is:

* A Backpacker whose mother used to be a gym trainer at the old Saffron City dojo before Sabrina took over. His quest revolves around trying to battle against other Fighting-type Gym Leaders using the techniques he inherited from his mother; despite that, he doesn't use only Fighting-types, but primarily physical attackers.

* A Hex Maniac who ends up going on her journey to indulge in her enjoyment of Ghost-types, but winds up with an appreciation for other types of Pokemon as well and becomes a better adjusted person of her journey. Only uses purple Pokemon.

* A Fairy Tale Girl who is sister of the above Hex Maniac and dresses in princess-like clothing; desires to create an ice cream shop someday where she makes the desserts alongside her Pokemon. Uses Fairy-types and Ice-types.

* A Pokemon Ranger who used to live in Almia when she was younger. Uses various Pokemon.

* An orphaned Ninja Boy with a sandstorm team who gets by with the help of Pickup Pokemon. Uses a Sandstorm team.

* A Team Magma Grunt who journeys to study Mega Evolution as a means of helping her organization. Uses a Sun Team.

* A Pokemon Breeder. Still trying to think of what to do with him. Uses a Rain Team.

Here's my trainer, Branwen!

She's from Viridian City originally, but moved to Johto with her mother pretty early on.

Like some children who threaten to run away from home because of strict but well-meaning parenting, she actually did run away, but got hella lost. But because of the way and note that she left, she was terrified to go back home, and ended up being one of those wild children.

My OC is a 20-something year old Poke Ball engineer. He doesn't do much battling, though he occasionally lets his Pokemon get some exercise against other trainers. He also tests balls on them and wild Pokemon.

He hasn't made any groundbreaking progress in Poke Ball technology. He has some tiny, decent innovations he could implement but he struggles with the social aspect of things and is easily deflated. So he doesn't really progress. He's no prodigy or anything like that, but he works a bit below his pay grade because he's too aloof to move up.

His team consists of Porygon2 and Magnezone. Magnezone causes problems for him because it fries technology and draws it to him. The workplace has a lot of Magnemites and such, so the Magnezone is usually just this fucking metal asteroid gravitating in the workplace. Magnezone really gets along with a wild Beldum that kind of follows OC around.

He also has an Elekid that's kind of a jerkass to him just because it's fun. Elekid's a big ol' softy but he's bored to tears most of the time and picks on this nameless OC.

One of his aces never sees the light of day, and that's his Raichu. Very enthusiastic, very high energy. It just kind of sits in the PC.

He also borrows Machamp from the workplace, and other similar Pokemon.

He's not particularly attractive or anything like that, but he's not good looking. His worst enemy is himself. He's too afraid to follow his dreams. He'd like to leave everything behind and go on an adventure, but he sees that trainers are usually pretty bold and happy people, and he shuts himself off. He'd also like to be a DJ or something for Goldenrod, because he thinks it'd be cool to put on this confident persona behind the mic.

His Pokemon mostly try to get him to open up. They lighten up the mood, and he's a passable person when he can get there, but it takes a lot. He'd like to not be lonely but doesn't really want to change at the same time.

He works for Silph Co.

I don't go out of my way to intentionally create OCs, but any game where I can customize my character I gradually think up a backstory and personality for them as I play. I guess it comes naturally when you write professionally.

Without going into detail, my trainer in X has a somewhat sad past but nothing edgy. She isn't any sort of epic trainer trying to be the best, she just lives the comfy life with inherited Pokemon, growing berries, breeding Deerlings, and painting people's Pokeballs to make some money.

Too many of you guys seem to be too afraid of making a Mary Sue and your characters suffer from it. You can have your character be interesting, just give them some real flaws

Maybe if you have a character whose a great battler, make them antisocial or something and maybe hyper competitive too. More important than flaws(which is important), characters need a personality. It's perfectly fine for the OC in your head to be as cool and competent as you want but if you want to share and have people care about the character then make their personality shine.

One-Punch Man has a hyper competent protagonist to the point where it should be boring but the deconstruction of certain super hero tropes and Saitama's personality make it an enjoyable read.

This applies to people making the slice of life type characters, give them a personality too, talk about their likes and dislikes or how they react in certain situations

The shtick for this is that Touzai consists of two Leagues, Azuma and Nishi, sharing a single Elite Four, in the same manner as Kanto and Johto, and like in G/S/C, there is a post-Elite Four section to the game. In East Version you start in Azuma, in West, you start in Nishi.

Each game has a complete story of its own but it intersects with the story of the other at various points (like there's a shared enemy Team, for example); you'd need to play both to get the full picture.

The end-game post Elite Four battle is, of course, a showdown with your counterpart, a la Red atop Mt. Silver.

She's a problem gambler and has a knack for 'dumb luck', which only feeds her tendency to place bets on trivial things.. She's won many contests with her Venomoth, gaining a small amount of fame in her home town. She has no desire to be the best trainer, just one that'll make you think "this bitch MIGHT kill me in my sleep."

Once tried out for team magma, but they weren't nice about boot camp and she fled, being the secret huge baby that she is.
