Got through graduating from the guild. The ending was kind of sad, mostly because of the music that played along with it. Meowth didn't do much for me before, but I actually felt kind of bad for him during the whole scene.
I now have the option to switch leaders and bench myself and Meowth, but since the two of us are the strongest members of the team, I won't do that. Might make Meowth the leader though, since that was my original plan.
>>
>>28225235
Everytime I play a PMD game I end up only using my starter and partner because I get attached to them so much.
>>
>>28225479
It wasn't exactly that I grew attached to them, but more that the two evolve into a few of my favorite Pokemon in the series.
I'll give Special Episodes 2 and 5 a shot soon, I saved 2 for later since that one was apparently good. 1 was alright, but 3 and 4 didn't do much for me. I don't know Team Charm, and they didn't hit me as very memorable despite being the main characters in the episode. Sunflora and Loudred felt like non-characters in the story, and the SE didn't help them that much, whereas Bidoof already had more screentime than them to begin with, and the extra characterization works with him.

Dual Destinies is good. I would recommend it.
As well as Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright if you haven't played that.

Finished SE2. Igglybuff was surprisingly strong, I thought he'd be a glass cannon. I actually cried when Armaldo had to leave Iggly. Even though it was a lot shorter, I felt like this story was way better than the main plot, since I actually felt for the characters throughout most of it. Time to do Grovyle's.
>>
>>28227454
If you thought Grovyle was flat or bland in the main story, the special episode redeems him a lot. His is also the longest of the 5.

Got to Icicle Forest in SE5. Enjoying it a lot so far, and I hope something tops Temporal Tower's theme later, hearing it early on was pretty strange since it was the final dungeon theme in the main story.

Never really thought any of Sky's spoilers were too shocking, especially when the opening scene reveals that Grovyle's a goody-goody that travels with you. I'll still wait until I'm finished playing it before reading what's been posted ITT.

No eyes is a common Japanese art cliche, they usually use it to add anonymity/mysteriousness to characters that usually don't show up in person.

Other examples with eyeless characters would be in games/VN with a self-insert, where their faces are usually covered or not drawn with eyes, since those are generally the most identifying feature of a character, and they want to leave it to player interpretation.
It can also be done at times just to make a character look creepy, dramatic, or upset.

>>28229431
Personally I've never minded that, if only because it's another mild loose end that offers people the chance to pick it back up and imagine what happens on their own. It's part of the reason I like Explorers, it's always felt like it's the richest with... plot threads? Brainstorm fuel? Whatever you want to call it. I started writing a story about the idea of Grovyle and co. having to integrate back into mundane life after living in post-apoc for who knows how long, but the idea spiraled out of my hands. I'll probably try it again someday, though, when I can outline things better.

Custom starters. A guide on how to get them is in the OP.

Only MD I tried besides PMD is EMD, which isn't one of the originals. In spite of its flaws, one of the things I liked the most about it was that it stressed the importance of using different units. Whereas in PMD almost everyone plays the same in the end, EMD's unit classes give everyone a different function.
Found a 3DS cia download for Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer, so I'll probably give that a try some time soon.

>>28230267
They're okay. A bit rough around the edges. I'd rather just play Sky or Super instead though.
>>
>>28230267
It's pretty good and sadly underrated by most fans. It has a few things that were ironed out in Explorers, but it's not that hard to look past it and enjoy the rest of the game.
>>
>>28230267
They're fine. not the greatest but I'm glad I played them otherwise I don't know if I'd be in this thread today.
>>
>>28230405
>Found a 3DS cia download for Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer, so I'll probably give that a try some time soon.
It'd only work on a New 3DS and if it's Nintendo's official release it's going to be in Japanese. If you have a New 3DS you're going to be fine, but the original 3DS can only play it trough BlargSnes, which slows the game down a little since the game saves after every turn. It's still playable, but you may find it a little annoying. There's a DS remake that uses the PMD DS engine, so you may play that instead if you want.
>>
>>28230467
Yeah, I know it only works on a n3DS, and it's a custom/injected .cia file. Been playing some Earthbound and Breath of Fire 2 before, they were pretty good.

Also, on a slightly different note I tried playing SMD with both the New 3DS's processing power and the unmodded/regular 3DS's. Some parts of the game had pretty bad framerate issues, like the Voidlands Mega Tyranitar fight.
>>
>>28230405
>>28230561
I know it'd be half off topic for the general and completely off topic for the board, but it would be great if you posted about your experience. That is, if nobody's bothered by it. I don't know.
>>
>>28230112
I've only ever played the DS Shiren game, and it's alright. I like the fact that you're able to walk back the way you came and "leave" the dungeon in case you get in over your head (something that Super could have stood to include, frankly). I didn't get far, though.

>>28230267
As for Rescue Team, it's been a long, long time since I last played it at all. My friend replayed it last year and ran into a lot of issues (mostly minor, but one major), but I've been having a PMD itch again and replaying RT just might be the way to scratch it.
>>
>>28230628
If it's okay with the rest of the general, then I'd gladly talk about it, since it might help bring some new discussion beyond speculation and waifus.

I was able to successfully install the .cia file, but I'm only at the name selection screen right now, didn't actually play it yet. I can't think of a good name now that I'm playing as a human and not a shotadog
>>
>>28230807
I just kept the official name, it feels kind of weird to do otherwise even though I guess you're supposed to.
>>
>>28230850
Ended up calling him Ray. Finished the opening cutscene, and right now I'm just talking to the townspeople to get a better understanding on what to do in the game. Thankfully, since it's a VC game, I don't have to worry about quicksaving or anything of that nature.

Also forgot to post a download link, in case anyone else wants to try it out if they have a New 3DS.

Got to the Bamboo Forest Village. This game doesn't hold your hand like PMD does, I'm already stepping on pretty crazy traps, so now I've been trying to play it safe. I'd assume attacking spaces in front of me would reveal a trap like in PMD, right?
Also heard something about how meat's used to transform yourself and enemies. That sounds pretty cool.
>>
>>28231474
iirc in the shiren series your weapons are gained from transforming enemies and then using them to attack?

>I'd assume attacking spaces in front of me would reveal a trap like in PMD, right?
Yep.

>Also heard something about how meat's used to transform yourself and enemies. That sounds pretty cool.
Here's a little advice, since there's this thing that might be confusing the original game doesn't even try to explain. If a wand has no uses left, you can use it one last time by throwing it.

>>28231529
You get weapons normally. You can transform the monster into meat though, and if someone eats said meat they become that enemy.

Is there a level 1 dungeon in super?

There aren't any. Because, well, you start at level 5 now. So yeah, there's a bunch of them.

Do I get any extra party members in Shiren? Doing fine with just myself, but it'd still be nice to go on an adventure with other people.

>>28235121
Everything you listed but the difficulty is a genuine problem with Super. Quit typing like a faggot.

>>28237602
It's Level 5 instead of 1 now. There are a few normal dungeons that have the level reset, and everything in Meowth's Theater resets your level and prevents you from bringing items. If you can bring items, the dungeons can be cheesed by bringing Hoopa's bottle, since his level doesn't reset.
>>
>>28238147
>Everything you listed but the difficulty is a genuine problem with Super.
Okay, let's see.

>can't rename recruited Pokémon
It is an issue, but a very minor one. It's not something that ruins the entire game.

>missions are semi-random instead of fully random
The only actual problem I see with this is that they haven't made use of this feature to make said missions more interesting. It's pretty much the same as the other games, except now they have more dialogue, some references and are a finite number. Again, not something that can ruin the entire game like most of GtI's problem do.

>story
We're talking about the game itself, not the story featured in it, are we? Again, not something that can ruin the whole game, not even when coupled with the two "problems" above.

>Salamence early in the game
It's a choice. You're not forced to use it. Actually, you aren't forced to do its mission at all.

>Do I get any extra party members in Shiren?
You do, but I won't tell you how it works, it's better if you find out by yourself. Also don't expect to have any control over their behaviour.
What has your highest floor been so far? I just got to floor 18.

The Super discussion is boring, it's basically saying the same stuff over and over.
>>
>>28238319
I think super is great but not for the same reason red/blue and time/dark/sky. It's more story oriented, everyone has a story while the older game were more exploration oriented. I like them all (beside GtI)
>>
>>28238319
None of the flaws are game-breaking, but they do add up and make the game overall less enjoyable. Earlygame Salamence is what caused the break system to exist, and that's one of the most annoying features Super has. The complete lack of random missions means that once you've done all the normal ones, you'll never get to do anything else. It would've been nice to have randomized missions that give you rewards like in the past three games. Renaming is a minor issue, but it does make it a lot harder to personalize your team. Nicknaming wouldn't even be an issue lore-wise, since if you're close enough to connect and enter dungeons with them, it wouldn't be weird giving them a nickname. The story has no bearing on the game's actually plays, guess I should've said that too. I still hate the second half. It's awful.
It's all minor flaws that shouldn't even be in the game, and overall makes things less enjoyable. Hopefully the next game will fix them all.

As for Shiren, I take it the guy in the second town will be one of my party members, right? He calls me "bro" a lot, and asked me to give him some money.
>>
>>28238537
>that's one of the most annoying features Super has
Yes. That's an actual problem with Super. The bad thing however is that it doesn't go away when you reach the postgame, which they could have done regardless, Salamence or not.

I disagree that they add up to make the whole experience less enjoyable, though I do think they should be fixed. And it's nothing like GtI is like that anon said.

>As for Shiren, I take it the guy in the second town will be one of my party members, right? He calls me "bro" a lot, and asked me to give him some money.
Yeah.
He's worse than escort missions from my experience.

>>
>>28239666
I think having normal pokemon boss in the story mode makes more sense. Legendaries should be post-game only

Super's unique dialogue only mildly saved them. The most unenjoyable part of every game.

To go back, choose the "Back" option when you get to the stairs. You can also go back by going to the left exit of a town. It isn't possible on the SNES version or after a certain point in the game.
If I remember correctly, items don't appear on levels you've already cleared(though monsters can still drop items). But it's pretty handy if the shop doesn't generate the items you want. You can also get around the no-item-generation restriction by going forward and then going back, because leaving a level by choosing "Back" doesn't count as clearing it. Or at least, I'm pretty sure that's how it works, it's been a while since I last played.
Much like the storage system, it's a way to make the game easier for new players. If you want to grind for items and money, it's possible. But items alone won't take you to victory, and it's not difficult for an experienced player to clear the main dungeon with no storage and no backtracking.

If you're really having trouble, try throwing money. If you walk onto money by holding B, then use the swap command to swap the money into your inventory, you can throw the money at enemies to deal big damage. Of course, the money can miss, and you won't be able to buy as much, but having a way to semi-reliably OHKO strong monsters is very valuable.

The SNES version is brutal for newcomers and isn't as good at teaching the player. For veterans, the main game is more fun, though.
On SNES, all of the enemies deal ridiculous damage. You can find really broken items that can completely carry you through the game. If you make it to the last dungeon, you will be thoroughly disappointed because you basically need to abuse an exploit in order to win, while the DS version not only fixes the exploit but provides a fair challenge rather than just killing you from across the map for having bad luck. The DS version also has some extra content.
I highly recommend the DS version over the SNES one, though it isn't entirely superior.

So if we ever go AM2R's road, what would we even add to make RT more enjoyable? Other than fixing the godawful recruiting system I mean really annoying shit, like having to escort them out, not being able to recruit last sage Pokemon, or being unable to recruit once you have 4 pokemon or if it would exceed size of 6*

We could borrow an idea from Gates and expand dungeons with outside areas. You're escaping from everyone at Mt. Blaze? Now you have also to travel on the pathways outside of the volcano! Could replace the midway point or something.

I mean, it's not like it's going to happen at least not in near future, but we can dream.

What's the best MD game? I've been playing Explorers of Darkness as my first foray into these games and holy fuck I hate it. It clearly wants me to grind dungeon missions until I can do the main storyline, but it constantly shoves me back to my fucking bedroom after every single dungeon for this repetitive "AND THREE: SMILES GO FOR MILES!" shit, all the while reminding me I'm supposed to be doing the main story.

Does the newest game NOT do this shit?
>>
>>28278605

Explorers of Sky is slightly better but stlil pretty much the same game. They're all like that.

No, maybe it's just not for you. If the core gameplay is fun but you just don't like the forced story setup, maybe you should check out Shiren the Wanderer.
>>
>>28278605
Pick your poison:

Rescue Team: Worst system of getting new Pokemon in the entire PMD series, period. Connection Orb might have not been as fun, but at least it was smooth.
Explorers: This.
Gates: "Eh" gameplay, probably the shortest one of them all.
Super: Probably the closest to an actual roguelike difficulty- wise, plot goes places in the second half.
>>
>>28278605
The most recent game (Super) forces you to progress the story, but I don't see why you think it's a problem. It doesn't force you to grind, you can just complete one or two easy missions and the story will progress regardless. I don't see your problem with it. I don't mind the story, and would be fine with it if the grind didn't bounce me back home every single time, when the design of the game fully expects me to grind. It just feels like it's designed to make me waste time. It's a bummer because I REALLY enjoy the gameplay and the dungeon crawl, but the game feels so counterintuitive when it comes to preparing me for story missions.

If I try to do the first story mission immediately, I get my ass kicked. So I go grind dungeon missions, but when I finish, the day is over and they remind me with great urgency that I'm supposed to be helping Azurill.

>>28278688
Hmm, thanks for this.

I'll check out Super and Shiren and see if they're what I'm looking for.
>>
>>28278706
It's obviously because, deep inside, that's what you really are.
>>
>>28278767

It shouldn't be as difficult as you're finding, I don't find that I need to grind until the postgame. Are you making good use of your items and moves?
>>
>>28278767
>the design of the game fully expects me to grind
It doesn't. You can still play even when you think you are "underlevelled".
>>
>>28278767
To elaborate: By "worst", I've meant it had a lot of flaws.

Imagine Explorers' system, but unpolished.

You can have only 4 Pokemon at the time and their size can't exceed 6*; if they die before you escort them (end dungeon/mission; reach midpoint in the few dungeons that have them or use Escape Orb) and you don't have a Reviver Seed, they're gone forever; midevo stages like Marill have negative recruit rates and most fully evolved Pokemon aren't recruitable at all, some Pokemon are really hard to even COME across (either deep in Lv. 1 dungeons or spawn rate so low Abra's more common)...

I am fairly sure I am forgetting some of the flaws that I should mention.
>>
>>28278773
Makes sense, it's my least favorite starter and I hate myself.
>>
>>28278798
>>28278807

Random dungeon Anorith were hitting me for 15-20 with normal attacks, when I have 40 HP. I could barely survive a single fight, let alone hope to make it to a boss. Am I basically expected to have a bag full of Oran Berries in the early game?
>>
>>28278838

Throw seeds and use orbs from a distance. Use moves if they come close.
>>
>>28278838
You recover HP every step you take, did you not notice? That's the kind of damage you can expect throughout the game because your health regenerates. You don't have to grind at all, just play normally.

>>28278895
That is something I didn't notice. In the first couple of dungeons, everything hits for pickles, so I guess I wasn't noticing my HP. First time I went into the story dungeon, there were two Anorith in the first room. They got next to me, hit me a few times, and I died. So I just figured I wasn't strong enough for it yet.

Maybe I'll try it again.

Explorers is the best.
Super is good, but it isn't the best, the story is good but it isn't as good as explorers story.
Connection orb is a good feature but they shouldn't remove the classic system for people who like it this way.

Post-game is lacking.

That are the flaws of PSMD for me,great game but explorers is better in every way

I've been playing since red and blue and never grinded during the main story. The gameplay is different and the games can be unforgiving but you should be able to manage. Use your items wisely.

I have phanpy as a starter in sky and he's pretty good.

Pikachu gets Discharge eventually, and since it hits the whole room you'll be in a good spot once that happens. As for Squirtle, you'll just have to tough the first couple dungeons out. Although, you're early on, you still might want to drop the game and play Sky instead, assuming you're not on cart.

Just finished super so spoilers warning

first of all I think I'm in love with my partner. Holy shit, best partner ever. The best line was ''You bet you silly sphere''. The partner by herself (since my fennekin was female) makes the whole game worth it.

Game was super fun, I'll see what the post game looks like.

First of all I'm glad Yveltal was not bad, I'm tired of people calling pokemon evil.

Game was somewhat easy but it's probably because of my starter choice. I went with Treecko and Fennekin. With Dragonbreath, Energy ball, Ember, PSybeam, Flamethrower, I was never really in danger. It's the easiest PMD game I played but it was still really enjoyable. Never died beside boss fights (where I had reviver seed) and reviver seed were so common that my bank is full of them.

This game makes me want to play blue rescue team and sky again and I don't know why but now Treecko is my favorite pokemon. It's been like 5 years since my last PMD game. It's really the best spinoff serie in the whole franchise
>>
>>28280057

>it's literally data without personality

Yes
>>
>>28280414
I'm personally fine with other MD/roguelikes, but PMD did put me off from fully enjoying any non-MD Pokemon game.
>no variety in characters
I felt the opposite when playing Etrian. My cleric and dancer felt completely different from each other, for example, whereas in PMD almost everyone caps and is an offensive unit.
Shiren's also pretty fun from what I've played, but I miss playing as a dog
>>
>>28280487
Didn't finish Etrian. It was really boring to me compared to PMD. The only good point is that it was really harder.
>>
>>28280414
The only one I know about is Shiren, so let's see.

>No variety in characters
What do you mean? The monsters have a lot more variety in their design and behaviour at least.

>No variety in moves
Again, you get that by transforming into said monsters. It works better in Shiren because the monsters themselves aren't being adapted from something else.

>Awful/non-existent story
Shiren 3 has a lot of story and is structured in the same way PMD is. You may like that one more, but I have yet to play it so I don't know. It's going to be the next one though.

>Izuna
Not MD. It seems to be nice though, I'll try to play both of them one day. They don't seem to be as interesting as Shiren to me though, somehow.

I just want to say how much I love EoT/EoD. The music, the emotion, the story, the atmosphere, it's just my favourite game of all time.

>>28281522

>>
>>28281466
I don't own a physical copy of Sky. I downloaded a ROM of it and I'm planning on playing through all the special episodes. Btw, do you need to unlock them by completing the main game?
>>
>>28281617
Fairly certain that there's an Action Replay code that unlocks all of them, so if that's the only thing you want to do, you can just use that cheat.
>>
>>28281617
You do unlock them by beating the main game, but...
>On emulator

Man, that's kind of a disservice to it. Emulators are harder to put your full attention to than handhelds and are way easier to get distracted from. I'd play it on DS if I were you. Hell, get a flashcart so you can play all the DS games for free.
>>
>>28281617

Yes.

>>28281599

> the last extra story is so goddamn good.
The ending is cheap. That was the one chance they had to not do this shit.
>>
>>28281667
Ah that would be nice.

>>28281671
Getting a flash cart is kind of difficult here, and I played EoT on my DS so I enjoyed most of the experience on the DS.

Is there any story-related post game content in EoT?
>>
>>28281677
Well, duh. But it was still sad as hell.
>>
>>28281803

I'm just going to stick with my headcanon and say it ended at the fade to black at the sunrise.
>>
>>28281784
More dungeons. I'd definitely play through it, it's a very polished EoT, you'll certainly enjoy yourself and there's a lot of new stuff you didn't even know you'd need but are all very helpful.
>>
>>28281784
There's a lot of postgame content in Explorers. The only thing Sky adds is the Shaymin Village arc which felt like annoying filler
>>
>>28281868

But anon, you got the best feature in the whole game for doing it.
>>
>>28281836
Thanks. I will look into it.

How are the post-EoS PMD games btw? I play only for the story, so if the story is crap it's a pass for me.
>>
>>28281886

There's the Wiiware things. I don't know about those.

There's Gates to Infinity. That's a pretty good story, but the gameplay takes a really bad plunge.

Super has a similar story to Gates, but a bit worse. Still, it's not bad and the gameplay is up to scratch. Also, the final twist will fuck you up.
>>
>>28281868
>which felt like annoying filler
How come?

>>28281886
AS came out before Sky, but I guess you don't know about it. The story is almost non-existant and it's only available in Japanese.
Gates to Infinity has bad gameplay and a good story. People used to think it also had a bad story, but now somehow the general opinion seems to have changed to it being the best one. I don't know what happened. It has the best characters so far at least, and I guess the execution itself is good as well.

>>28281924
>Super has a similar story to Gates
Only the last part is, and it's pretty much just a bunch of references. It's still different enough. You could say the same about the middle part being literally just the guild from Explorers.
Super has great gameplay and great story, but you'll find a lot of people disagreeing with this.

As soon as I get back home I'm gonna start sky, bought it a few months ago but never played it.

My problem is PMD are so fun I always end up stopping playing other pokemon games.

Got a question for you guys, Is blue as fun as I remember it to be? I really really REALLY liked it as a child and I can't remember the story beside the fact that you run away for a reason I can't remember. Please don't spoil me I really want to play it again but I don't want to ruin my childhood memory. Should I buy it again? (I don't like emulating, I like keeping the games I buy, especially pokemon games since I always 100% them). I liked the fact that you could visit pokemon in their own little island. If the post-game/gameplay is not worth it, I won't buy it and I'll just emulate for the story.

I also have GtI (never finished it, I'll probably start over) but I don't really enjoy it so I'll probably play it after sky and blue.

Don't worry. It might be better if you played it before Sky though, since it would be easier to get used to its problems.
