You're right. The Gen 7 character design is possibly the weakest in all of Pokemon.

Compare Serena/Shauna to SMProtag/Lillie, and the new girls don't even remotely compare.

Gen 5 still the undisputed Champion for its harem though. It will never be topped. Pic Related, and it's not even counting Rosa or Hilda, who are also top tier.

Original manual for GRBY said Red was 11, I believe the manual for GSC stated Gold was Red. Gen 3 and Gen 4 I don't quite remember where they were stated, could have just been a strategy guide though and mean nothing. The first one is the only real point there and that was mechanical change that didn't really change much of the outer game.
Second one has been a thing since gen 2.
Third was gen 3. Except for the part where all lore was actually relevant to a pokemon and not just meaningless filler.
That was 2 and a bit of 3 given you could call up leaders via match call. Then there's the fame checker in FRLG.
That was gen 3 as it introduced a variety of biomes, the only thing different in 4 was the abundance of snow in all honesty which was more of a detriment if anything given that extremely tedious snow route.
And the last is purely your opinion, especially since jazz and "comfy atmospheres" don't particularly mesh with a sense of adventure
