I really feel the ending is going to be Alan just retiring from battles completely after being so battle obsessed. A rematch between them won't make sense even for a final farewell if they're going to portray Alan as wanting to stop battling and just being Sycamore's assistant.

The thing is there's no reason to watch a show with no ending. If Ash goes on for another 10 years everything from XY and prior will be forgotten like it never happened.

If the show has no endgame then it feels like there's no reason to continue watching. Part of the reason most of us stuck around after the OS is because we assumed the anime would eventually end with either AG/DP or XY.

It's pretty clear the mega specials were meant to converge with the show. Manon even talked about Ash in special 1. And if Team Flare never showed up, there would never be any conflict this season after the Korrina arc. It would just be the gyms and some really shitty rivalries.

Flare needed to show up and I'm fine with their execution. It's just lacking any sort of character conflict for Ash and the others.
