Guilmon was literally designed as "Agumon, except better". And WarGrowlmon is a pretty blatant MetalGreymon clone, though I don't remember if Takato ever actually designed that one, or if it was a spontaneous mutation. I know he didn't design Megidramon, and nobody in-universe expected Gallantmon.

Every digimon season has the protagonist get a dinosaur and the rival get some sort of canine except Xros wars and 02 which technically only did the first part.
I didn't see Veemon as a dinosaur at first but one of its fusions with stingmon is "DinoBeemon"
