What "hook" will S/M have? That's what I want to know:

AG: First new female companion, intro of Contests, first taste of competent Ash evolving his pokemon

DP: Female co-star, Paul as a big main rival, competent villains in Galactic and Hunter J, Ash at his strongest and Infernape's story

BW: They tried to make this a throwback to the OS with two Gym leader companions and competent Team Rocket

XY: Serena's huge crush on Ash, competent Ash, Bonnie/Clemont, etc.


It seems every series has one big "hook" that the writers try to lure people in with. I just can't think of what S/M would do. Mallow or any other female would just be another companion, and the island trials already are similar to stuff the anime has done in the past.

Since the first batch of S/M eps are already written and made, we can only hope the backlash of XY's ending and beginning of S/M will cause the writers to make changes somewhere in the middle of 2017.

If Serena leaves it would be interesting if she came back mid-journey, something that never happened before. Or to see Ash finally be competent enough and plan to win the league this time after seeing the backlash. If they even do a league next arc.

Honestly, the only reason I could see someone not emofagging about what's left of the series is because they're not as invested as those that do (either always or they got less invested after the league). I can't see how anyone could seriously expect amour to happen or even just Serena going to Alola. After this saga anyone who still had any faith that Ash would amount to something or have some aspect of his character change (being in a relationship), probably won't have any hopes for his character.

Ash went on a year long winning streak, and was at his absolute best. It was set up for him to win the league, but they still made him lose. In terms of his "love life" they gave him a girl deeply in love with him but kept it the same for over 100 episodes.

Most who will still watch after this will just watch for the Pokemon, Main Girl, and rivals even though the former two won't result in/or have any big accomplishment.

The problem is that XY promised, or rather appeared to promise, a lot of hype shit (Serena, Ash being competent again) that ended up literally going nowhere and that will most probably end up being undone so that the character and the rat end up in a clean slate for Alola, even moreso now that Gen VII will have a different format for the game standard quest (trial grinding instead of gym grinding). At the end, you'll end with an even smaller viewership than the one BW ended with: japanese children, a smaller number of gaijin children, and an even smaller number of grown-up autists watching it. And regarding the last group, those are the ones that would keep watching the anime until the day they die if it outlasts them, even if every future season is just the same repeated formula rehashed for the gorillionth time.

Although, if one wants to lose time watching non-conclusive episodic children's chinese cartoons, there are better options to choose than Pokemon.

I feel there needs to be a distinction here. In my opinion, Ash's character was well handled all throughout XY and even became legitimately interesting again for the first time in forever in the Greninja trials arc. It was the writers who assassinated him in XY&Z38, especially with that dreadful lack of reaction to losing the league literally one hit away from victory. I can still defend the character himself (unlike, say, BW Ash) but realize the writers killed his potential.

What frustrates me the most is that as soon as the news that Ash lost again came out, my normie friends who don't follow the anime closely instantly went to make fun of his character as if he was still an incompetent idiot. No matter what his character actually becomes, he'll always keep that stigma until the writers/execs will actually let him accomplish something (which they've made clear now will never happen).

Greninja is not getting boxed or being left somewhere you fuckboys. Greninja's entire purpose and the way events in his life played out binds him directly to Ash. Both of them practically justify each other's existence. Greninja cannot get stronger without Ash, and Ash forgoing Greninja in some manner would be a pure detriment to his own progress. It's called Ash-Greninja for a reason.

This is isn't at all like any of Ash's other Pokémon, none of them can fucking transform through the sheer power of their immaculate bond, none of them have a developed backstory of how literally no trainer was suitable or capable of bringing out their full potential until Ash entered the picture. Olympia flat out says their future together holds great power and love. You don't just abandon all of this shit for the sake of marketing and status quo.

The ultimatum really is if Greninja leaves, then Ash leaves too. They are fucking soulmates and the only way either of them can achieve their life goals is if the two of them continue to work together. You know, to get much, much stronger. Of course the other possible option is Ash just bringing Greninja to the next region, but that's a lot more cumbersome than it sounds. Unless Ash's role in the story is changed, you can't just have him with this super powered Pokémon and expect it to work. They could pull some really contrived bullshit reasoning to depower the thing, but nobody wants to see that.

Next series is called "Pocket Monsters Ohana!"

Has new cast, no Ash. The new trainer has a Pikachu though. 4 person group who are all around the same age.

Luna is in and seems to have Popplio. Hau and Lillie are also in the group. New protagonist with Pikachu is dressed similar to the SM boy but looks different and has brown hair.

Ash comes back in specials next year as part of the anime's 20th. They take place years after XY and each one will be based on a past region and bring back characters from that region.
