In HGSS but it's a Pikachu... Going by stats Cynthia's Garchomp in B2W2 is stronger despite being 4 levels lower in challenge mode, and Barry's starter in Platinum after 20+ E4 wins is too. Hell a lot of those post-game trainers in B2W2 have all around better teams and fights than Red.

Drawing Hilbert with non-Gen V Pokemon feels wrong.

Red is pretty cool. He has a nice design- enough details to be recognizable and iconic, but not too cluttered like Ruby. I think the appeal is pretty self-evident, even if you don't personally like him.
