How do you keep track of which pokemon is in which ball?

In the first anime episode it was shown that pokeballs can have little icons with their type on it. 4th gen also had pokeball seals. Otherwise I think they just place their pokemon in a certain order on their belt or whatever. Its been shown that ash has mistakenly thrown out the wrong pokemon when his pokeballs are rearranged or taken off the belt

In some manga, the red part of the pokeball is kinda transparent and you can see inside. It looks way better than the plain plastic look.
