What everyone else is saying, and it's one of my go-to pokemon. However, one of the Gen 1 pokemon was going to end up as the major mascot of the series that gets shoved everywhere anyway, and I'm glad it was Pikachu. It's a good design with large appeal compared to girly Clefairy or the mean-looking Charizard.

I didn't claim my cosplay pikachu, I don't even remember stepping into a contest hall. Had I known I would have gotten a free one I would have done it sooner. I didn't pay much attention to the game's release so I didn't know the details

Pretty much how I feel. I like Pikachu, it's just all over the place that I'm pretty meh about it. Never really liked Raichu for some reason, but that's changing. Nothing wrong with it, it just never interested me.

Gen 1 had the best Pokemon designs by far, and that's all the matters

Most of the problems with Gen 1 had to do with the tight budget, tight technological tools and other restrictions that no other Gen faced (thanks to Gen 1 being the most sold game ever)

The Black/White 2 trailer looked infinitely more interesting than tired old Ash and Pikachu going through the motions. Changing up MC helps keep a show like this fresh. As of now, it's just stagnant.

Personally, I'm both. He's not that great of a design unlike my boy Raichu and pushed too much to the forefront when he doesn't deserve or need to be when there could be other, better mascots from Gen 1 or just some equal treatment for any lucky mon who wants to cosplay.

Maybe, but freshness isn't the point of the anime. It's merchandising to kids. And for that, you need familiar mascots (both human and Pokemon) to keep kids watching.
