People feel threatened by what they don't understand.

When Pokemon Go exploded you had a lot of people who were all confused, didn't understand why it was popular and threw as much shade onto it that they could. Maybe not here, but everywhere else.

Why do people do this? Because people don't like feeling left out. It makes them uncomfortable. Seeing a lot of people enjoy something you don't understand makes you feel like you are missing something. Human beings are social creatures after all.

In the absence of understanding, what do these left-out human beings do? They try to tear down the thing that makes them feel like an outsider.

The point is that games which are more popular are subject to the "left out" effect. Meaning those people who don't understand the game want to magnify its flaws, announce them from the rooftops, finger point and ridicule, all in an effort not to feel like an outsider. "See? See? That thing I don't understand and therefore don't like that is popular is shit after all! Hahahaha!"

Because the outsiders go to such hyperbolic ends to bring the game down, the people who actually enjoy the game for what it is have to go to equally hyperbolic ends in order to prop it up and justify their enjoyment of the game. We have reached the point where the outsiders are actively going through post histories and making fun of posters who dared to get excited about the game.

Do we honestly have to go through this shit every time a popular game launches to disappointment? Is it so bad that we let people feel excited by something that we have to tear them down because we feel disappointment ourselves (or in some cases just drive-by shit-posting for "fun").

How do we fix this problem, knowing we have no control over how others conduct themselves (developers not delivering or gamers getting excited). We only have control over our own conduct (how we talk about it). We have no control over whether a developer delivers. We should have no control over people's excitement of a game or purchasing habits. And yet, every time we think that we do. We tell developers how to make their games (perfect every time), how gamers should buy their games (never preorder), and how gamers should get excited about their games (some, but not too much).

Just let people be and enjoy the games they enjoy. If you don't like it or don't understand it (and in many cases people don't like what they don't understand), don't post about it in a negative way.

I will be the first to ridicule myself for such behavior. The younger and dumber me did do this on many occasions, but I realized how toxic and annoying it can be to a community.

tl;dr - Don't shit post.

Pokemon GO was a branch out to all of the kids who liked Pokemon as kids but dropped it when it was "uncool", as well as to the parents and older siblings of kids who liked it, who wound up watching some of the show and learning some of the names. This alongside the existing Pokemon Super-fan category explains the vast majority of players.
Pokemon GO sold primarily to the first two categories did have a small effect on outsiders, however this was not because of the "left out" effect you speak of. Primarily it spread to outsiders on job-sites and classrooms, between coworkers and acquaintances as a form of competition between them, and something that people who otherwise do nothing but see each-other could do to have fun with one-another in a minimally intrusive way. The craze set in when the game's "keeping up" nature began to reveal itself. Every day you didn't GO, you were a day behind everyone else. Whether you were the Pokefan, out to prove his superiority, the casual who wanted to stick it to the fan, or the outsider who just wanted to hold his ground, there was incentive to stay in the game.

The people who "tear down" the game are the people that recognized that GO was a shoddily cobbled together game, that was selling only nostalgia and community, and no actual quality gameplay. The people "propping it up" are those who dumped time and money into it, and are hesitant to walk away from that investment. Many of this group are the ones who claim that "it will get better, they will fix X, introduce Y, and let us Z" to give them hope that their time investment will pay out.
There is another sub-group of detractors who pin GO as an example of the problems of our time. It encourages people wandering around with their nose in their phone, oblivious to their surroundings, unable to separate for more than a few moments, all the wile freely giving up metric tons of data that are the real reason for the product in the first place.

There are a lot of people here that seem to think of Pokémon as their secret club, hence all the fretting about "normies" getting into it again.

Let's be real, everyone on this degenerate website reads gaf so was this some shoddy attempt at reusing your shitty thesis or some equally awful attempt at making some cross-forum commentary? Or are you just bored anon? We can talk if you want, pokemons pretty cool innit

OP your lack of self-awareness is pretty disturbing. All the pieces are in place for you to actually reflect on the way you post and come across, but it's not happening, you'd rather just blame anything but yourself.

You were laughed out of the other thread (and rightfully so for outright saying you're smarter than anyone who didn't like the game), so your response is to write an essay about how people are big bullies who hate on anything popular.
You posted about how everyone else keeps misunderstanding you and how you're actually a really humble guy. (if you have to point out how humble you are... you're not)
You then even post a story about how your own dad doesn't "get you", and it's his thought process that's somehow to blame for it.
You keep posturing with intelligence in your posts. This is a silly way to try to win arguments, it doesn't really impress anyone.

Now tell me, what's the common factor in all of these situations?
>>
Yeah well fuck you, I like it.
>>
Post this shit on /v/, will be funny seeing all the people get triggered there
>>
I like the game because it gives me more of an excuse to go out and see more of the city. It's a "new" game type for Pokemon, and it's kind of a place holder before Sun comes out.
