It's a SoL for lonely 60+ year olds who's children never come to visit them again. It's not meant to make them laugh, it's meant to make them smile and remember the days it was like when family was around.

This particular comic is for the grandparents who are nothing more than free babysitters.

Like with the OP's strip, I bet it ran decades ago. The mobile phone was simply added in and the words/joke changed. Pic. related is an example of a rerun.

Foxtrot has been doing Pokemon related strips since the '90s, I remember one series about trying to track down a holo-foil Charizard card.
