Gen 1 has so many dumbass bullshit typings that either don't make sense or are just wasted opportunities.

Bulbasaur should be pure Grass.
Psyduck and Golduck should be Water/Psychic.
Arbok should be Poison/Dark.
All the fucking Normal/Flying birds should be pure Flying (except Doduo and Dodrio).
Voltorb and Electrode should be Electric/Steel.
Gyarados should be pure Water.
All the Ground/Rock types should be pure Rock (except Onix).
Mew should be pure Normal.

I think it is based on intelligence. Lugia is one of the legendary pokémon, and as we all know, pokémon lore tend to place legendaries as "protector" or "guardian" of something. Lugia probably has to keep the balance of the sea. It has to restrain itself.

I think there should've been a legit Air/Wind type from the start. Grounded Pokemon would have access to wind-based moves that don't involve having to be airborne at all. Would've opened the door to so many different/unique designs, and so many Pokemon like Lugia could've benefited from it.

Rock and Ground should be combined into Earth type.
Normal/Flying types should remove the normal typing and just be Flying type, or call it Air type.
