Lets say she retains her usual appearances in the plot, the only difference being that instead of her being the Shalour Gym Leader, its old man Gurrkin. She still meets you a few times to battle prior, still fights your first mega battle, still foists a Lucario on you etc etc.
Then when you're past the E4 she reveals herself again at full strength, saying she saw potential in you and wanted another strong Mega-trainer to fight and now its time to see how far you've come, etc etc.
She could run a team something like:
Mienshao
Pangoro (or Scrafty, but a Kalos mon seems more likely)
Toxicroak
Hawlucha
Machamp
Mega Lucario
Feels like it'd be at least a little tougher than Diantha was, especially if she had reasonable movesets, along with being better tied into the story.

But they wanted her to be the one that introduces the player to Mega Evolution, which is better served by a character whom is also still new/learning the concept themselves.
Korrina is the successor; she's got a bright future ahead of her but for XY she needed to be a Gym Leader.

Of course. But fighting types in general have reasonable access to those.
As a monotype trainer I'm not saying she'd be some unstoppable force, but it'd still have less glaring holes than Diantha's team while having more offensive presence. Especially Mega Lucario, which even with the retarded AI could be a real danger to a slower team.

Diantha at least has this "im the princess of Kalos region" aura around her and she's perfect at being Cynthia counterpart. Korrina seems more like Maylene, Whitney, Candice girl next door appearnce
