Why don't you ask your friend if he's a furry/pokephile directly? It might be awkward but if you 2 are friends then he might open his midn to you.

If not, the most common pokemon waifus or whatever they're called that I've seen are gardevoir, lucario, charizard, dragonite, lopunny, latias, serperior, zoroark and blaziken.
I'm sure there are more but any of those would be a good start for your question, I'd say.
