Tepig is strongest for the main game, Oshawott is good if you want it for HMs but I'd just get a Swanna for Surf, Dive and Fly.

Fire/Fighting is a good typing that hits a lot of stuff for SE damage, Tepig is the best in-game unless you wanna hack in hidden abilities.

Tepig is the best for main game, snivy is incredibly boring (meganium 2.0) and oshawott is at the middle

I just recently realized that they're supposed to all be wearing clothes. Snivy is wearing a cloak, Tepig is wearing pants and a mask, and Oshawott is wearing a fluffy swimsuit.

I've grown to like these starters more over the years, but like others it took time.

For Vanilla B/W, Oshawott is your best bet as Unova has a surprising lack of Water types in general.

Also, Darmanitan is infinitely better than Emboar and can be obtained pretty early, the same goes for any other Grass Type to Serperior.

B2/W2 they're all more or less even, and move tutors help round out Serperior's lackluster movepool.

Emboar has a pretty nice movepool that covers weaknesses fairly well, it's just a shame he's so slow.

Samurott does a similar thing to a lesser extent by learning some bug moves and is pretty solid all around and has a lot of options.

Serperior's movepool is kinda shallow but some fun can be had with coil + leafblade and maybe return or some other physical moves.

All in all I'd say they're a solid bunch and don't deserve the hate they get.
