What went wrong?

Took me a second to understand your autism. Gen 5 pokemon being similar to Gen 1 pokemon is because it was a pseudo reboot. First gen not set in Fake-Japan, first gen where no previous-gen pokemon were available before beating the game. So what they did was make amurrican versions of Gen 1.

Some of these comparisons are really bizarre though. Vullaby and Clefairy? Dwebble and Shellder?

Half of those comparisons don't work. Sandile/NidoranM? Vullaby/Jigglypuff? Really?

Most of these are either franchise cliches anyway or grasping at straws (usually just because they share a type). A few do work (like Throh/Sawk to Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan and the Geodude line to the Roggenrola line), but the majority don't really support your argument very well.
