It was the first instance of Ash being a mature person and being a mentor of sorts. And while they didn't fully explore this relationship between the two, there are still elements of this (such as May's contest battles suffering because as several people point out, she's learning a more traditional battle oriented style from Ash than what works better for contests). Also the last episode of AG completed their arc very well with a nice chill episode.
