Most starter middle stage evolutions are SO much better the final form. Dewott, Pignite, Croconaw, Monferno & Braixen. I always slap an everstone on them once they reach that form so they don't evolve into there ugly final evolution.

In some of those cases, it almost looks like the pre-evolution forms are the point in a Pokemon's life before they went from cute child to hideous adolescents/adults. Other times it's the total opposite, but I think it's the latter, mostly. The same thing happens to certain animals in real life.
