The best rival, desu.

He started out as a complete prick, stealing his first pokémon. He has a similar goal as the player, to be the best. Through your interactions, he questions why he cannot beat you. Eventually he finds that you can't be the best by being cruel and nasty, you've gotta bond with your pokémon. Great arc for a kids game.
