There's a Champion system in Alola, Kukui confirms this by saying you could become the "Island Challenge Champion". Plus the Trial Captains are basically Gym Leaders with the Kahunas being like Elite Four so there really isn't much of a difference.

That was a different NPC who specifically said there is a waterfall somewhere in the world that flows backwards which is seen as a tourist attraction. A lot of people took that as a hint towards the Distortion World but unless a portal to it is somehow open to the general public that would be impossible.

Just like every region has a champion - someone who defeated all of that regions gym leaders and E4 members - and to become a champion yourself you need to do the same and defeat that person, the Alola Champion is just someone who completed all every single island trial, defeated the four Kahunas and became the strongest trainer of the region.

Gyms, E4, and champion don't happen until post game. Island trials are the main game.
